BOARD 03? TRUSTEES

APPOINTMENT TO ACCOUNTANCY BOARD

[Juty* 3*,

(4) A recommendation from the Committee on Accountancy that Mr. R. 0 . Berger, C. P. A., of the firm of Price, Waterhouse, & Company of Chicago, be appointed a member of the Board of Examiners in Accountancy for the term of three years, beginning July 1, 1917, to succeed Mr. James Hall whose term expired on June 30, 1917.

On motion of Mrs. Evans, this appointment was made.

MANUFACTURE OF CHEMICALS

(5) A communication from Professor Roger Adams covering the manufacture of chemicals.

No action was taken in this matter.

I N S T I T U T E FOR RESEARCH

(6) A statement from Dean Kinley that the University Senate has discussed at considerable length the proposal to coordinate all of our research work at the University into a University of Illinois Institute for Research. The faculty has discussed the matter also in its various subdivisions, including the executive faculty of the Graduate School, the staff of the Agricultural Experiment Station, the staff of the Engineering Experiment Station, etc. I am hoping to submit to the next meeting of the Board a formal recommendation as to the; constitution of such an insitute for research.

No action was taken in this matter. LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOR PROFESSOR SLATER

(7) A recommendation from Dean C. R. Richards that Assistant Professor W. A. Slater be given leave of absence without salary for five months beginning September 1, 1917, to engage in work connected with the national defense.

On motion of Mrs. Busey, this reeOjmmendation was approved.

SALARY OF DIRECTOR BENEDICT

(8) A request from Professor Bruce W. Benedict asking that his salary as Director of the Shop Laboratories be continued in full until September 1, 1917. As Professor Benedict, without any extra pay, has given instruction in Military 1 and 2 to over one hundred students during a term of three semesters, I recommend that the salary be continued for July and August.

On motion of Mr. Carr, this recommendation was approved. At this point, Mr. Trimble withdrew,

BUILDING SCHEDULE

(9) A recommendation that the funds appropriated by the General Assembly for buildings during the present biennium be apportioned as follows: (1) School of Education $215,000 (2) Smith Music Hall .....r 160,000
