woman. To her^ would be assigned the general direction of the social life of the institution. Without deciding this question at the present time, the Board must decide on the placing of certain partitions in the Residence Hall, if the question is to be left open as to whether such a head of the hall is to be employed or not. In the plans submitted to the Board, ample provision was made for the stewardess, matron, or whatever the official may be called to whom the duties ordinarily included under such a head are assigned. In order to make provision for the social head qf the hall, the Supervising Architect proposes a plan involving a bed-room and a parlor of considerable size on the first floor at the north-east corner of the building;

On motion of Mr. Hoit, the Supervising Architect was authorized to set apart this space as a possible assignment for a head of the hall in accordance with the blue print submitted. PROFESSOR ALVORD'S LEAVE EXTENDED

(3) A request from Professor Charles W . Alvord that his leave of absence be extended for two weeks or possibly one month, on the ground that his health does not improve as rapidly as he had expected.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, the President of the University was authorized to extend Professor Alvord's leave of absence. PROPOSED AGENCY FOR SALE OF SMITH FARM

(4) A request from Mr. H a r r y Reichman, a real estate agent in Champaign, to be made the agent of the Board for the sale of the farm in Section 26, Stanton Township, containing 240 acres, presented to the University by Captain T. J. Smith. H e offers to handle that piece of land for a commission of two dollars an acre.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, this matter was referred to the President of the University, with power to act.

SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL RESEARCH (5) A letter from Professor Charles C. Torrey of Yale College in regard to the School of Research at Jerusalem. I think it is very desirable that the University should join with other leading universities of the country in the support of these historic schools, but I am not prepared at the present time to make recommendation on this subject.

No action was taken in this matter.

LEASES ON SMITH FARMS on the' the are (6) A statement from Mr. Lloyd Morey, Acting Comptroller, that recommendation of Professor J. G. Mosier he has renewed the leases on three Smith farms. The particulars and terms are identical with those of year 1916-17. The new leases are for one year from March 1, 1917, and on file in the Secretary's office.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, these leases were approved.
