year, August 31^ 1917, with salary at the rate of $1,600 a year. Mr. Nicolet will fill the vacancy caused by the withdrawal of Mr. Venning.

On motion of Mr. Carr, this appointment was made. PURCHASE OF BOOKS ABROAD

(35) A recommendation from Mr. P. L. Windsor, University Librarian, that the University send a man abroad during the coming spring, summer, or autumn, or sometime during the next year, to purchase books for the University Library. Mr. Windsor believes that a very substantial saving might be effected if someone were on the ground to make selections from the large offerings during the spring and during next year.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, the President of the University was authorized to send a book purchaser to Europe either during the coming spring or summer or during the following year, at the expense of the University.

REQUEST FROM SCHOOL OF ORIENTAL RESEARCH (36) A request from Professor Charles C. Torrey that the University contribute to the work of the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem. This School is supported by a group of American universities and public-spirited citizens. The work is very valuable and I think the University of Illinois should do its share in all such important public undertakings. It would derive substantial benefit from the same by the increased facilities for the work of instruction in eastern archeology and history.

No action was taken on this subject.

MILITARY TRAINING (37) A letter from Major General H. L. Scott, Chief of Staff, W a r Department, outlining an alternative course of training for infantry units of the senior division of the Reserve Officers* Training Corps. This is a provision made to suit the conveience of institutions in which military training is not required.

No action was taken in this matter.

APPOINTMENT OF MR. H. F. RAWLINGS (38) Two recommendations concerning appointments: 1. A recommendation from the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences that Mr. Harvey F. Rawlings, M.D., be appointed Instructor in Anatomy for five months, beginning February 1, 1917, at a salary of $150 a month. APPOINTMENT OF MR. W. S. HENDRIXSON 2. A recommendation from Professor W. A. Noyes, Director of the Chemistry laboratory, approved by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, that Professor W. S. Hendrixson of Grinnell, Iowa, be appointed Lecturer in Chemistry for the second semester of the academic
