Session After Recess, June 13, 1916.

When the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois convened after the recess at 9.30 a. m., on Tuesday, June 13, 1916, the following members were present: President Abbott, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Miss Watson. President James was present.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES.

The Secretary presented the minutes of the meeting of May 27, 1916. On motion of Mr. Carr, the minutes were approved as printed on pages 795 to 811 above.

COLLEGE PLACE LOTS.

President James introduced Mayor O. L. Browder, of Urbana, who made a statement concerning the desire of the owners of the College Place lots in Champaign, west of the Armory, to sell the property to the University. Mayor Browder stated that the reported intention of the University to extend its campus in this direction was a hindrance to the sale of this property to anyone else. ' The Executive Commitee was directed to look over this property at once and to make a report at the next meeting of the board.

A U T H O R I T Y TO CONFER DEGREES,

On motion of Mrs. Busey, the President of the University was authorized to confer degrees on the candidates properly certified by the several colleges and schools of the University and by the University Senate.*

MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT JAMES.

The board proceeded to the consideration of the following matters submitted by the President of the University:

C A R N E G I E P E N S I O N FOR MRS. B U R R I L L .

(1) A letter from the Carnegie Foundation concerning the pension of Mrs. T. J. Burrill: June 6, 1916. President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois, Urbana, III. ing of the Executive Committee held on June 2d, Mrs. Sarah Helen Alexander Burrill was, upon your recommendation and in accordance with the rules of the Foundation, granted a pension of $1,600 to become effective on May 15, 1916, on the termination of Professor BurrilPs allowance thirty days after his death. (2) A recommendation that the sum of $1,200 be paid to Dr. V. V. Phelps for extra work in connection with the publication of the University of Illinois Directory during the past three years.

On motion of Mr. Hoit, this recommendation was approved. The vote was as follows: Ayes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Small, Mr. Trevett, Mr. Ward.

(3) A telegram from Justice John P. McGoorty, of Chicago, that the Committee of the Irish Fellowship Club, on the Irish Fellowship Foundation, guarantees a fund of $1,200 for Gaelic research work in the University of Illinois for the coming year. This accompanies a letter to the same effect to Dr. Gertrude Schoepperle, and the suggestion is made that this sum be used to pay a salary of $1,000 to Mr. J. H. Lloyd, of Dublin, Ireland, for the coming year, as Fellow in Gaelic at the University of Illinois; and that $200, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be reserved to cover his traveling expenses to Urbana, the balance being used to purchase books and materials necessary in his work which should belong to the University after he is through with them. In case Mr., Lloyd does not accept, some other person will be chosen.

On motion of Miss Watson, this gift from the Irish Fellowship Foundation was accepted with thanks, and the President of the University was authorized to offer the fellowship in Gaelic to Mr. J. H. Lloyd. The vote
