APPOINTMENT OF MR. G. F. WH1CHER.

(11) A recommendation that Mr. George F. Whicher be appointed Instructor in English for the year beginning September 1, 1915, at a salary of $1,400 a year. On motion of Mr. Carr, this appointment was made.

APPOINTMENT OF DR. K E N N E T H McKENZIE.

(12) A recommendation that Dr. Kenneth McKenzie of Yale University be appointed Professor of Romance Languages at a salary of $4,000 a year, work, and salary to begin September 1, 1915; and that he be appointed head of the department until further notice. On motion of Mr. Carr, this appointment was made. C H A R G E FOR CHAIRS A T B A N D CONCERTS. (13) A recommendation from Mr. A. A. Harding, Director of the University Military Bands, approved by Prof. J. L.. Erb^and Prof. James M. White, that the Director of the Bands be given the use of the University's folding chairs at the twilight concerts given by the band, and that he be permitted to make a charge of ten cents a chair during each concert, the proceeds to be deposited in the band treasury to meet band expenses. On motion of Mrs. Evans, this recommendation was concurred in.

APPROPRIATION FOR MISSISSIPPI VALLEY HISTORICAL REVIEW.

(14) A request from Prof. Clarence W. Alvord of the Department of. History, that the University continue for the year 1915-16 the subscription of $100 in support of the Mississippi Valley Historical Review. This periodical is edited by Dr. Alvord. It is a valuable publication, and the location of its editorial department at the University is a distinct advantage to our Department of History and to our students and professors. On motion of Mr. Carr, the sum of $100 was appropriated as requested. The vote was as follows: Ayes, President Abbott, Mr. Carr, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Ward, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Trevett.

APPOINTMENT OF MR. H. W . P U C K E T T .

(15) A recommendation that the President of the University be given authority to appoint Mr. H. W. Puckett Instructor in German for one year, beginning September 1, 1915, at a salary of $1,400 a year. On motion of Mrs. Henrotin, authority to make this appointment was given. PORTRAIT OF PROF. I O. the Department of Civil Engineering was offered, Dean Goss has urged me to have my portrait painted for the University; and therefore a few weeks ago, after the negotiations for my successor were practically completed, I secured Mr. Merton Grenhagen of Chicago to paint my portrait. A short time ago it was completed, and I invited a considerable number of my friends to view i t ; and it seemed to give satisfaction. I recently sent the picture to the O'Brien Art Galleries, 334 Michigan Avenue, Chicago, to be framed, and I am told that the picture is now framed and awaits my order. I write to say that I shall be pleased if the University will accept this portrait, and make such disposition of it as seems best. I prefer that there shall be no formalities connected with the matter. With highest regards I beg to remain, Yours very respectfully,

On motion of Mr. Carr, the President of the University was authorized to accept this portrait on behalf of the University, and to extend to Prof. Baker on behalf of the Trustees their cordial thanks for this valuable gift.

RESIGNATION OF PROF. L. D. C O F F M A N .

(17) The resignation of Prof. L. D. Coffman, of the Department of Education, to take effect September 1, 1915. On the recommendation of President James and on motion of Miss Watson, this resignation was accepted.

BUST OF PROF. E D W A R D S N Y D E R PRESENTED.

(18) A statement that Mr. Lorado Taft has offered to present to the University of Illinois a bust of Prof. Edward Snyder in marble. On motion of Mrs. Evans, the President of the University was authorized to accept this gift on behalf of the Trustees, and to express to Mr. Taft their cordial appreciation for this handsome gift.
