Such a condition, however, is e n t i r e l y u n s a t i s f a c t o r y , a n d t h e T r u s t e e s a r e now facing t h e n e c e s s i t y of p r o v i d i n g a n a d e q u a t e t e a c h i n g h o s p i t a l o r of seeing the medical school classed a m o n g t h e inferior schools of t h e c o u n t r y .

B r o w n e , S e c r e t a r y of t h e College of Medicine, of a fire discovered in t h e c u r a t o r ' s s t o r e r o o m in t h e b a s e m e n t l a b o r a t o r y a n n e x of t h e Medical B u i l d i n g . T h e fire w a s e x t i n g u i s h e d w i t h o u t a n y d a m a g e to s p e a k of. T h e loss t o s t o c k is n o m i n a l a n d t h e i n j u r y t o t h e b u i l d i n g is slight.* I desire, however, to call t h e a t t e n t i o n of t h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s t o t h e f a c t t h a t t h e c u r a t o r ' s s t o r e r o o m is v e r y m u c h o v e r c r o w d e d w i t h m a t e r i a l w h i c h is to some e x t e n t i n f l a m m a b l e . I t h i n k it w o u l d p r o b a b l y be d e s i r a b l e t o e r e c t a s m a l l b u i l d i n g to t h e w e s t o of t h e l a b o r a t o r y a n n e x , s a y one s t o r y i n h e i g h t , in w h i c h t h e l a b o r a t o r y s t o r e s could be housed, so a s to d i m i n i s h t h e d a n g e r from fire in t h e m a i n building.

D a y , A c t i n g D e a n of t h e School of P h a r macy, c o n c e r n i n g a p r o p o s e d site for a n e w building for t h e School of P h a r m a c y . I desire to u r g e v e r y s t r o n g l y u p o n t h e B o a r d of T r u s t e e s t h e a b s o l u t e n e c e s sity of p r o v i d i n g a site for a building, a n d t h e erection of a s u i t a b l e b u i l d i n g for t h e School of P h a r m a c y . T h e q u a r t e r s n o w occupied b y t h e school a t t h e c o r n e r of Michigan A v e n u e a n d T w e l f t h S t r e e t c a n n o t be r e t a i n e d v e r y long, a s t h e owners of t h e b u i l d i n g desire to t e a r it down. I t seems, m o r e o v e r , d e s i r a b l e to r e m o v e t h e school to t h e W e s t Side a n d b r i n g it into i m m e d i a t e p r o x i m i t y w i t h t h e Colleges of Medicine a n d D e n t i s t r y . The g r o w t h of t h e College of D e n t i s t r y is likely to be so r a p i d t h a t it will n e e d all t h e building n o w occupied b y it. T h e b o a r d will, t h e r e f o r e , find itself in t h e u n p l e a s a n t s i t u a t i o n of h a v i n g a d e p a r t m e n t w i t h o u t a local h a b i t a t i o n or site, u n l e s s it p r o v i d e s a b u i l d i n g for t h i s purpose, a n d it is n o t too soon to p r o c u r e a site. T h e r e a r e s e v e r a l a v a i l a b l e sites in t h e n e i g h b o r h o o d . T h e one p r e v i o u s l y p r o p o s e d is held a t s u c h a h i g h figure t h a t it w o u l d s e e m b e t t e r to select a site w h i c h would/ cost s o m e w h a t less, a n d a c q u i r e t h e site f a c i n g H a r r i s o n Street, a n d e a s t of t h e p r e s e n t college building, for t h e p u r p o s e s of a h o s p i t a l .

•It was voted that the President of the board should investigate the question of sites and report to the hoard.

RESOLUTIONS CONCERNING MR. HARRY GILL.

The Secretary presented certain correspondence between the Secretary of the Illini Club of Chicago and President Abbott concerning resolutions of the Illini Club commending the work of Mr. Harry Gill as Instructor in Track Athletics. The correspondence and resolutions were received to be filed.

APPOINTMENTS, COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

The Secretary presented also for record the list of appointments to the faculty of the Senior College of the College of Medicine, made by the President of the University on September 4, 1914. These appointments, which carry no salary, are for the academic year beginning September 1, 1914, and ending August 31, 1915.

Mr. W. L. Abbott, President, Board of Trustees, University of Illinois, Chicago, III. MY DEAR SIR: I was waited on last Saturday, the 12th inst., by Mr. J. Sherman Root, insurance adjuster, and the following settlement was agreed upon between us, regarding the damage from the recent fire in the curator's storeroom. Glass ..... $10 00 Cabinet repair $6 00 Painting and calcimining 24 00 — Pipe covering 10 00 Total $60 00 Plaster 10 00 This is ample compensation for what damage was done, and I am sure that payment will be made shortly. I have previously reported to you this fire, its probable cause and the damage done. Yours very truly,
