Sixth—The Board of Trustees guarantee that the expenses will in no case where the entire architectural services are furnished by the branch office exceed 2 per cent on the contract price. Seventh—The contract price upon which the commission is based is understood to be the total cost of the building ready to receive the furniture and furnishings.

9 P A Y M E N T OF S T A T E ARCHITECT'S BILL. Prof. James M. White, Supervising Architect, presented a bill from the State Architect, for his work on the plans of the Administration Building and the addition; to the Chemistry Laboratory, contracts for which have just been awarded, amounting to eight thousand eight hundred twenty-four dollars and eighty-five cents ($8,824.85), and recommended that this bill be paid except for the sum of five hundred dollars ($500), to be retained pending the further advancement of the work on these contracts. On motion of Superintendent Blair, this recommendation of the Supervising Architect's was approved, and an appropriation of eight thousand three hundred twenty-four dollars and eighty-five cents ($8,324.85) was made for the partial payment of this bill; the vote being as follows: Ayes, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Evans, Mrs. Henrotin, Mr. Hoit, Mr. Montgomery, Mr. Moore, Mr. Trevett, Miss Watson; noes, none; absent, Mr. Abbott* Mrs. Busey, Mr. Dunne, Mr. Meeker.

PROPOSED GIFT BY CAPT. S M I T H . President James presented the following letter from Capt. Thomas J. Smith, of Champaign, proposing to convey to the Trustees of the University of Illinois certain property, on condition that the Trustees erect within two years from this date, upon the Campus, a building for the use of the Music Department of the University, to cost at least $215,000, and on the further condition, of the payment to Capt. Thomas J. Smith of a five per cent annuity on $215,000, payable semi-annually while he shall live, and at the same rate to his executors after his death for a period of six months: [Capt. To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. DEAR SIR: Looking to the final execution of my desire to cause the erection of a building on the Campus of the University of Illinois for the Musical School of the University, as outlined in my letter to you of the 8th ultimo, I desire now to make you the following proposition, to w i t : I propose to convey to the trustees of the University the following described property, to w i t : The southwest quarter and the west half of the southeast quarter of section twenty-six (26), township twenty (20) north, range ten (10) east of the Third Principal Meridian, two hundred and forty acres, valued at two hundred twenty-five dollars ($225) per acre $54,000 This farm is in first class condition, with residence, barn, and other buildings—very productive—in Stanton Township, three and onehalf miles north of St. Joseph, 111. All that part of the north half of section twenty-three (23), township twenty-two (22) north, range nine (9) east of the Third Principal Meridian, which lies west of the Illinois Central Railroad right of way, two hundred fourteen (214) acres, worth two hundred fifty dollars ($250) per acre 53,000 This farm is two and one-half miles north of Rantoul, and it joins the Illinois Central right of way and Kankakee and Urbana Interurban line. The northwest quarter, and the south half of the northeast quarter, of section thirty-one (31), township twenty-two (22) north, range eight (8,) east of the Third Principal Meridian, two hundred forty (240) acres (less Illinois Central right of w a y ) , worth three hundred dollars ($300) per acre 72,000 This farm, forty (40) acres of which lies in the corporate limits of the town of Fisher, 111., is in as good condition as any farm in the United States. The east half of the southwest quarter of section fourteen (14), township nineteen (19) north, range eight (8) east of the Third Principal Meridian, worth four hundred fifty dollars ($450) per acre 36,000 This tract adjoins the corporate limits of the city of Champaign.'' On the southwest the land adjoining has heretofore sold for five hundred dollars ($500) per acre. Making a total of $215,000
