A s v e r y often h a p p e n s , little seemed to come o u t of t h e r e s e a r c h d u r i n g t h e first y e a r . D u r i n g t h e second y e a r , however, Mr. B r o n s o n B a r l o w , t h e r e s e a r c h a s s i s t a n t e n g a g e d on t h e w o r k , s t r u c k a n i n t e r e s t i n g a n d p r o m i s i n g lead, w h i c h , it is believed, will l e a d to r e s u l t s of v e r y g r e a t v a l u e to t h e c a n n i n g i n d u s t r y of t h e world. Mr. B a r l o w is w i l l i n g to c o n t i n u e t o give all h i s t i m e to t h i s w o r k for a n o t h e r y e a r a t a s a l a r y of fifteen h u n d r e d dollars ($1,500). The additional expense of t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n a s e s t i m a t e d b y Dr. R a h n is four h u n d r e d d o l l a r s ( $ 4 0 0 ) , i n c l u d i n g seventy-five d o l l a r s ($75) for m a t e r i a l s , twenty-five d o l l a r s ($25) f o r l a b o r , t w o h u n d r e d d o l l a r s ($200) for t r a v e l i n g expenses, a n d one h u n d r e d d o l l a r s ($100) for i n c i d e n t a l s . I n o t h e r w o r d s t h e c o n t r i b u t i o n of t h e C a n n e r s ' A s s o c i a tion will cover a b o u t half t h e e x p e n s e s of t h e i n v e s t i g a t i o n .
