mining operations are carried on, the use of explosives and electricity in mining, the prevention of accidents, and all other inquiries and technologic investigations pertinent to the industry of mining coal. The investigations herefore described, shall be under the supervision of the director of the Bureau of Mines or his representative, the director of the Geological Survey of the State of Illinois, and the head of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, who shall jointly determine the methods to be employed, but each party to the agreement shall direct the work of his agents in carrying on the investigation thus mutually agreed upon. The publication of the results of these investigations by any of the parties to this agreement shall recognize on the cover and title page the cooperation of said contracting parties. During the progress of the work free access to all records shall be afforded to each party to this agreement for examination and criticism. When the work is completed, said parties of the second part shall be furnished by the Bureau of Mines with manuscript copies of all records and reports, and, when the printing is completed, with file copies of said report; and in addition thereto the Bureau of Mines will distribute a reasonable number of copies of such printed reports to the citizens of the State of Illinois; but not more than one copy of each printed report shall be given to any one person. Each party to this agreement shall submit, as of December 31st and June 30th, to the other parties to this agreement, a statement of all expenditures made during the preceeding six months in carrying out the cooperative investigations. To provide the necessary funds to carry on the aforesaid investigations, the following amounts are mutually agreed upon: On behalf of the Bureau of Mines, the director of said bureau hereby agrees to furnish the services of the following employes: Competent mining engineers for eight months, at salaries at the rate of $3,300.00 per annum $2,200 00 Expenses, same 470 00 A competent and experienced geologist for six months, at a salary at the rate of $3,000.00 per annum 1,500 00 Expenses, same 300 00 A junior chemist for one year, at a salary of $900.00 per a n n u m . . . 900 00 A competent and experienced chemist for two months, at a salary at the rate of $3,300'.00 per annum 550 00 Expenses, same , 50 00 A foreman miner, for one year, at a salary of $1,380.00 per annum. 1,380 00 .Total , $7,350 00 The duty of the said mining engineer will be the study of coal mining waste, the use of explosives, and related matters, and to conduct tests and demonstrate hydraulic methods of bringing down coal in the State of Illinois; the duty of the geologist will be to study the origin and the occurrence of gas in coal.in said.State; the duty of the said chemists will be in relation to coal mine dust and gases. The said employes of the Bureau of Mines will have offices in the said State of Illinois as hereinafter provided. On behalf of the State of Illinois, the Geological Survey and the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois of said State, by and through their duly authorized officers, will furnish, at the city of Urbana in the said State, a laboratory properly equipped for said work as above contemplated and specified, together with proper office room, furniture, and supplies, and will pay all other expenses incident to the combined work as above contemplated, excepting travel and subsistence expenses and the salaries herein before specified; and the said parties of the second part in the State of Illinois further undertake and agree to provide for competent and skilled engineers, geologists, chemists, and other employes, to work in con-
