DEAR PRESIDENT J A M E S — A t a m e e t i n g of t h e Council of A d m i n i s t r a t i o n

held Sept. 19, Dean Davenport called t h e a t t e n t i o n of t h e council to t h e lack of police service supplied by t h e local a u t h o r i t i e s t o t h e vicinity of t h e University. After some discussion of t h e m a t t e r , i t w a s voted t h a t in t h e opinion of t h e council t h e r e should be t w o deputy sheriffs for continuous police duty, day a n d night,, on a n d about t h e University campus. I n t h e opinion of t h e council t h e present condition p r e s e n t s a n emergency which seems t o require t h a t such provision be m a d e a t once. T h i n k i n g t h a t you m a y wish to present t h i s m a t t e r to t h e t r u s t e e s , I a m sending you t h i s note t h a t you m a y have a t h a n d t h e recommendation of t h e council. CO-OPERATIVE WORK I N MINING E N G I N E E R I N G . 4. A communication from D r . W. F . M. Goss, dean of t h e College of Engineering, r e l a t i n g ' t o t h e work of t h e University in m i n i n g engineering in cooperation w i t h t h e United S t a t e s B u r e a u of Mines a n d t h e S t a t e Geological Survey. Dean Goss's letter called a t t e n t i o n t o t h e fact t h a t t h e FortySeventh General Assembly appropriated five t h o u s a n d dollars ($5,000.00) for such cooperative work, a n d stated t h a t several conferences have been held between t h e r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of t h e v a r i o u s i n t e r e s t s involved in t h e proposed plan of cooperation; t h a t a s a result of t h e s e conferences a n a g r e e m e n t h a s been entered into between t h e professor of Mining- E n g i n e e r i n g of t h e University, t h e director of t h e State Geological Survey, a n d t h e acting director of t h e B u r e a u of Mines (see copy of t h i s a g r e e m e n t printed a s "Enclosure One" b e l o w ) ; a n d t h a t t h e r e h a s been a subsequent agreement a s t o t h e purposes for which t h e D e p a r t m e n t of Mining E n g i n e e r i n g a t t h e University of Illinois shall expend its appropriation u n d e r t h i s plan of cooperation (see copy of t h i s a g r e e m e n t also, printed as "Enclosure T w o " below). [Enclosure One.] Agreement between the directors of the State Geological Survey of Illinois, the head of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of Illinois, and the acting director of the United States Bureau of Mines.
