On the recommendation of President James, it was moved that the basement tower room in the library be equipped with steel book cases, and that an appropriation of fifteen hundred dollars ($1,500.00), or so much thereof as may be necessary, be made for the purpose. This motion was lost by the following vote: Ayes, Mr. Grout, Mr. Hoit,' Mr. Moore; hoes, Mr. Abbott, Mrs. Bahrenburg, Mrs. Busey, Mrs. Evans; absent, Mr. Anthony, Mr. Blair, Mr. D'eneen, Mr. Hatch, Mr. Meeker. President James asked to have recorded in the minutes of the meeting his protest against putting wooden shelving in this room, on account of the danger from fire. After further discussion, Mrs. Busey moved to reconsider the last motion, and the reconsideration carried. Final action on this matter was postponed until the members of the board could have an opportunity to look over the situation for themselves. At this point Mr. Moore withdrew. There being then no quorum present, the board adjourned.

Meeting of the'Executive Committee.

After the adjournment of the session of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois, on June 22, 1911, a meeting of the Executive Committee of the board was held, at the Blackstone hotel in Chicago. There were present Messrs. Abbott and Grout, of the committee, Mrs. Bahrenburg, Mrs. Busey, Mrs. Evans and Mr. Hoit, members of the board, and President James.

FARM MECHANICS BUILDING.

It was voted to refer to the Committee on Buildings and Grounds, with power to act, the plans for enlarging the Farm Mechanics building, and to appropriate for this purpose the sum of eight thousand dollars ($8,000.00), given for the said purpose by the Forty-seventh General Assembly.

CIVIL SERVICE—AUTHORITY TO DISMISS UNDESIRABLE EMPLOYES.

Attention was called to the fact that, with the exception of the instructional and scientific staffs, private secretaries in the offices of the president and the deans of men and women, and students, all persons holding permanent appointments in the University on July 1, 1911, will come uder the provisions of the.Civil Service Code, as amended bythe Forty-seventh General Assembly, and will not be subject to removal except after a hearing before the Civil Service Commission.
