E X C H A N G E OP INSTRUCTORS.

The exchange of instructors for the year between Leland Stanford University and the University of Illinois by which Mr. Ponzer goes to Leland Stanford and Mr. Manning comes to the University of Illinois was authorized, each University to pay its own instructor.

F I L L I N G VACANCIES.

The president was authorized to fill all vacancies according to the budget adopted and such as might occur because of resignation or declination.

FURNITURE.

The president was authorized to approve the purchase of furniture for Dean Clark's office, not to exceed $400.00 in amount, by the followi n g vote: Yeas, Crebs, Abbott, Davison, Grout and Moore and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; nays, n o n e ; absent, Governor Deneen, Messrs. Meeker, Blair and H a t c h and Mrs. Bahrenburg. The president of the University was also authorized to approve the request from the State Geological Survey for the furnishing of its new offices in the Natural History building, excluding items which belong under the head of scientific equipment rather than under the "head of furniture.

M I N I N G ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT.

The following proposition with regard to mining engineering prepared by,Dean Goss'was approved by the following vote: Yeas, Crebs, Abbott, Davison, Grout and Moore and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; 7 nays, n o n e ; absent, Governor Deneen, Blair, Meeker, Hatch, and Mrs. Bahrenburg.

.President Ed[muncL J. Jamves, University of Illinois: DEAR SIR—By an act of the Legislature the Trustees of the University of Illinois are "authorized and directed to establish in the College of Engineering at the University, a department of mining engineering," and the sum of $7,500.00 per annum has been appropriated to carry out the purpose stated. I recommend that the full sum appropriated be "assigned to the purpose :named, to be expended under the following conditions: 1. That the cost of the department in its specialized functions arising from salaries and other accounts, shall not exceed the amount appropriated. 2. That as a first step in the establishment of the department, there be -appointed a professor of Mining Engineering at a salary of not less than $3,000.00 nor more than $4,000.00, and that later when courses shall have "been arranged, there be appointed such instructors and assistants as may iDe needed, subject to the condition set forth in paragraph 1.
