Illinois, at the yearly rental of one hundred dollars. This is at the same price and according to the same conditions as the present contract with him dated April 28, 1906. On motion of Mr. H a t c h and by the following vote the request was .-approved and authority was given to the proper officers of the board to sign said contract: Yeas, Crebs, Abbott, Davison, Hatch, Grout, Meeker, Moore and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; nays, none; absent, Governor Deneen, Blair and Mrs. Bahrenburg. INSPECTION OP ORCHARDS. 7. A request that Professor J. C. Blair and Professor C. S. Crandall be authorized to make an inspection trip through the orchard regions of the far west during the present summer. It is estimated that the trip will cost seven hundred dollars, and it is suggested that the expenses be paid from the fund for orchard investigation receipts. On motion of Mr. Grout and by the following vote the request Avas approved and the necessary appropriation was m a d e : Yeas, Crebs, Abbott, Davison, Hatch, Grout, Meeker, Moore and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; nays, none; absent, Governor Deneen, Blair and Mrs. Bahrenburg.

REPORT OF STATE LABORATORY OF NATURAL HISTORY.

8. Report of the director of the State Laboratory of Natural History. Yoted that the report be received and printed in the minutes. On motion of Mr. Hatch and by the following vote the salary of the director of the State Laboratory of Natural History was fixed" at $1,500.00 for the academic }^ear 1909-10, and the director was given authority to carry on the work of the laboratory during the summer within the limits of the appropriation granted by the Legislature: Yeas, Crebs, Abbott, Davison, Hatch, Grout,- Meeker, Moore and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; nays, none; absent, Governor Deneen, Blair and Mrs. Bahrenburg.

ILLINOIS STATE LABORATORY OF NATURAL HISTORY.

June 3, 1909. President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois: DEAR SIR—I had intended to prepare a rather full report on the operations of the State Laboratory of Natural History for the June meeting of the trustees of the University, but legislative delay in dealing with appropriations for the coming two years has made this impracticable. The omnibus bill is now, however, in a position such that the State Laboratory appropriation is practically determined for the next two years at the same sum as previously; namely, $9,500.00 per annum. I have been husbanding the current appropriation rather carefully, and find that I shall have an unexpended balance of something over a thousand dollars on the first of July. I am preparing to continue and complete the forestry survey of the State begun last summer in cooperation with the United States Forest Service, and have an understanding to that effect with the director of that service. I am also making an arrangement for further special work on the census of Illinois birds, to cover some points not sufficiently worked out in 1906 and 1907; and am also preparing to re-commence work, on the Illinois river
