T h e number registered in physical training; for w o m e n includes all students who regularly exercised in the g y m n a s i u m . Those mentioned in the report for m e n were simply the ones w h o registered for instruction and took it regularly. . It will be seen from the examination of the registration that t h e special things which w e sometimes feel will attract students most widely, were n o t particularly popular. This is true or household science, a n d , omitting those w o m e n who simply took exercise in t h e g y m n a sium, of physical training for w o m e n / S t u d e n t s elect most widely those courses which w e give regularly a n d which they can count toward a degree. As we can increase the offerings in our regular courses we will appeal t o a greater number of teachers and students. In addition to the regular courses which we gave, we offered also a n u m b e r of lectures. Dr. William J . Rolfe of Cambridge, Massachusetts, was with us for three weeks and lectured daily on Shakespeare, a n d other topics connected with English literature. Professor Forbes, of the University; Dr. Ernst F l a g g Henderson, of Cambridge, Massachusetts; Professor Charles A . McMurry, of California, Pennsylvania; President Livingston C. Lord, of t h e Eastern Illinois Normal School; Professor Charles A . Bennet, of Bradley Polytechnic Institute; and Professor Charles T . Baker, of Columbia University; each lectured daily for a week. In addition to these lectures several were given by members of our awn faculty. This list included Professor Oliver, Professor Hottes, Professor Carman, Professor Stebbins, Professor Hollister, Dean Greene, Professor Barton, Professor K e m p , Professor Frank Smith, Professor Sisson, and Dr. Stearns. T h e surprising part about it to m e was that each one of these lectures had a good attendance and seemed to arouse interest. I had a feeling at the b e g i n n i n g of the session t h a t we were probably overdoing t h e matter of lectures, but I was convinced later that this was not so. Mr. Adams in his public speaking classes presented a feature that seemed to please everybody in working up a play which was given near t h e close of the session in t h e open air. Mr. Schwartz also worked u p a good chorus which gave a concert at close of t h e season. * All these special features, I think, added interest and attracted attention. T h e attendance at t h e s u m m e r session seems to be growing very satisfactorily. If it is continued it will bring us more and more teachers, a n d I see n o reason w h y we should n o t soon have a thousand here in t h e summer. W e shall thus be doing a service of incalculable value to the State of Illinois. I feel strongly that the m o n e y which we p u t into the session is well e x p e n d e d . Very respectfully yours,
