caused by s t e a m w a t e r s t o g e t h e r w i t h e x p e r i m e n t s to show t h e relation bet w e e n t h e composition of t h e w a t e r a n d i t s t e n d e n c y to corrode, foam or cause scale, and such o t h e r special w o r k as m a y from t i m e to t i m e be directed b y t h e Board of Control. 12. T h a t samples shall be collected from t h e public w a t e r supplies of t h e S t a t e for t h e s a n i t a r y analysis, for t h e purpose of d e t e r m i n i n g t h e p o t a b i l i t y of such supplies. Such analyses shall include t h e d e t e r m i n a t i o n of b a c t e r i a and t h e presence or absence of bacillus coli communis, according t o s t a n d a r d methods p r o m u l g a t e d b y t h e American P u b l i c H e a l t h Association. T h a t similar analysis s h a l l be m a d e of t h e river w a t e r a t chosen distances below points of pollution t o d e t e r m i n e t h e persistence of c o n t a m i n a t i n g m a t t e r , t h e specific d e t e r m i n a t i o n s to be m a d e in connection w i t h t h e s e i n v e s t i g a t i o n s t o be based upon t h e special p r o b l e m in each case a n d t o be d e s i g n a t e d b y t h e Board of Control. Such i n v e s t i g a t i o n s shall b e e x t e n d e d to p r i v a t e w a t e r supplies w h e n e v e r in t h e opinion of t h e B o a r d of Control such a n a l y s e s a r e desirable. I t is u n d e r s t o o d a n d a g r e e d t h a t t h e w o r k indicated in t h i s section shall a p p l y b o t h to surface a n d to g r o u n d w a t e r s . 13. T h a t t h e r e shall be m a i n t a i n e d a series of e x p e r i m e n t s upon t h e b e s t m e t h o d s of t r e a t i n g w a t e r supplies subject to p o l l u t i o n of various k i n d s a n d t o t h e disorders d u e to. microscopic o r g a n i s m s such a s c r e n o t h r i x , t h e s e investigations to be d e s i g n a t e d as " E x p e r i m e n t a l W o r k u p o n t h e T r e a t m e n t of W a t e r , " a n d t h e e x t e n t of t h e w o r k a n d t h e c h a r a c t e r of t h e t e s t s shall be d e t e r m i n e d b y t h e Board of Cont ol. 14. T h a t t h e provisional a l l o t m e n t s for t h e various i n v e s t i g a t i o n s h e r e i n provided shall be m a d e according t o t h e following schedule, it b e i n g u n d e r stood a n d agreed t h a t in case experience shall show t h a t a c h a n g e in such a l l o t m e n t s will be of a d v a n t a g e to t h e w o r k , such c h a n g e m a y be m a d e by t h e Board of Control. T h a t in case it shall be found previous to t h e close of t h e t e r m of t h i s contract t h a t t h e expenses i n c u r r e d u n d e r t h i s a g r e e m e n t will be g r e a t e r t h a n t h e t o t a l a m o u n t of t h e fund provided, r e t r e n c h m e n t shall be m a d e b y -suspension, according to t h e decision of t h e Board of Control. 16. T h a t in case t h e expenses of t h e w o r k o u t l i n e d in t h i s a g r e e m e n t should n o t be as g r e a t as t h e fund provided, a d j u s t m e n t s h a l l be m a d e in t h e last m o n t h of t h e t e r m of t h e c o n t r a c t b y p a y i n g salaries a n d expenses from t h e various a l l o t m e n t s in such a w a y t h a t t h e e x p e n d i t u r e s of each p a r t y h e r e u n t o subscribed s h a l l be a n e q u a l p r o p o r t i o n to t h e a m o u n t c o n t r i b u t e d by each to t h e fund. 17. And, be i t u n d e r s t o o d a n d agreed t h a t t h e o r i g i n a l notes a n d records of t h e work performed u n d e r t h i s c o n t r a c t s h a l l be k e p t in t h e custody of t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i v e director a n d copies thereof issued t o t h e several p a r t i e s to t h i s a g r e e m e n t upon demand. T h a t each of said p a r t i e s shall h a v e t h e r i g h t to use a n y p a r t of t h e r e s u l t s as m a y be of value in its special line of w o r k for purposes of publication, b u t t h a t t h e p u b l i c a t i o n of t h e r e s u l t s of t h e e n t i r e series of investigations as a w h o l e shall be reserved to t h e p a r t y of t h e first p a r t . I n t h e p u b l i c a t i o n of said r e p o r t s by t h e p a r t y of t h e first p a r t , t h e r e l a t i o n s h i p of each p a r t y to t h e r e p o r t shall b e clearly stated, a n d
