UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS.

[Aug. 21

Meeting of August 21, 1907.

A special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois was held at 139 Adams street, Chicago, August 21, 1907, pursuant to the following notice which was sent out by the secretary, August 16, 1907: • ^ Upon the i call of the president, Mr. W. L. Abbott, there will be a special meeting of the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois at 1:00 p. m., Wednesday, August 21, 1907, at 139 Adams street, Chicago, for the purpose of receiving reports of committees and to take action on such matters . as may be properly presented. When the board met pursuant to this call, the following members were present: Messrs. Abbott, Hatch, Lehman, McLean, Madden, and Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Busey; absent, Governor Deneen and Mr. Blair,. Dr. Davison and Mrs. Alexander. President James was absent; Vice President Burrill was present.

COAL BIDS.

An informal report with regard to the coal bids and bids for hauling the same was made by Mr. Abbott, chairman of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds. A complete report will be made at the next meeting.

BRONSON BLOCK.

President Abbott reported an interview with Mr. Bronson with regard to the purchase of the block at the southwest corner of Mathews avenue and Illinois street.. Mr. Lehman moved that the board offer Mr. Bronson $25,000.00 for the block, and that if the offer were refused the attorney for the board, Judge Harker, be instructed to commence legal proceedings for the condemnation of the block, so that it might be used for the site for the new Physics Laboratory; provided, that in his judgment such proceedings would be safe and legal. The question was divided, and the proposition to offer $25,000 for the lot was carried. It was moved t a postpone action on the proposition with regard to condemnation until the" next meeting of the board. The motion was lost, and the second .proposition was then adopted.
