31. The Class of 1906 request permission from the Board of Trustees to erect an ornamental gateway at the John street entrance to the campus. Voted, on motion of Mr. McLean, that the Board of Trustees highly appreciates and commends the good will shown by the senior class in proposing to erect a memorial gate at the J o h n street entrance to the University g r o u n d s ; that, however, it anticipates that the cost of such a structure would probably be more than the class would wish to meet; and, further, that the plans of the grounds have not as yet been so definitely made as t o - w a r r a n t the erection at present of a memorial gate at the point n a m e d ; and that, therefore, the Board suggests that the class committee confer concerning a memorial with the chairman of the Committee on Buildings and Grounds, M r . A. S. Bullard. 32. The Director of the staff of the Engineering Experiment Station requests the appointment of Mr. Francis K. Ovitz as Assistant in Chemistry for the Engineering Experiment Station at a salary of $75.00 per month, from Jan. 1 to July 1, 1906. Voted that such appointment be made. 33. The Dean of the College of Science requests the appointment of a successor to Mr. Ovitz at a salary of $70.00 per month, from Jan. 1 to July 1, 1906. Voted that the President of the University be authorized to make such appointment. 34. Mr. Albert R. Curtiss, Instructor in the Woodshop of the Mechanical Engineering Department, has resigned, with the request that his resignation be accepted as soon as possible. The Dean of the College of Engineering recommends that his resignation be accepted, to date from Feb. 1, 1906, and that authority be given to appoint his successor at the same salary for the rest of the year. Voted that the President of the University be authorized to make such appointment. 35. The Helvetia Milk Condensing Company of Highland, Illinois, has offered to give the University the sum of $1,000.00 to establish a research fellowship in chemistry for a period of two years. The investigation to be made by this fellow is to be upon the value of evaporated cream as a food for infants. Voted that while the Board of Trustees express their sincere appreciation of this kind offer, they do not see their way clear to accept it at present. 36. Under authority given by the Board 'of Trustees the following appointments have been made by the President of the University since the last meeting of the Board: Miss Edith Williams, assistant in Woman's Gymnasium, at $70.00 for the academic year, filling the place made vacant by the resignation of Miss Mary Davison. Miss Florence Wilson, stenographer in the Vice President's office, at a salary of $40.00 a month, beginning Nov. 1, 1905, vice Lulu M. Lego resigned. Miss Eleanor Beardsley, instructor of Elementary Voice Students, to receive 75 per cent of their tuitions as her remuneration. Frederick Post, Armorer and Administrative Assistant in Military Department, at a salary of $45.00 a month for seven months, from Nov. 1, 1905. R. B. Otis, instructor in General Engineering Drawing, for eight months, at a salary of $80.00 a month, in place of G. W. Eckhard. Earl D. Finch, stenographer in Law School, at a salary of $15.00 a month, beginning Dec. 1, 1905. Truman L. Kelley, stenographer in the -Library, full time, from Jan. 1 to Sept. 1, 1906, at $50.00 a month.
