apparatus and the electrical apparatus in these buildings severally to the heads of the departments of mechanical and electrical engineering in the University, and to obtain their approval of the same. The discussion upon the report concerning the School of Medicine of the University was then resumed. Mr. Smith moved as a substitute for the pending motion that the University enter into a lease with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in accordance with the Committee's report, there being inserted an option of purchase at the end of twenty-five years. This motion was lost on the following vote: Yeas—Messrs. Smith, Hatch and Nightingale. Nays—Messrs. Bullard, Fulkerson, McLean and Mrs. Carriel and Mrs. Abbott. Absent—Governor Tanner, Messrs. Bayliss and McKay, and Mrs. Flower. Mrs. Carriel offered the following resolution, which was adopted: Besolved, That to insure more intelligent action on the part of the Trustees, typewritten copies of such reports of the Deans of the several colleges as are made shall be sent from the office of the President of the University to each member of the Board five days before the quarterly meetings. These reports shall be confined strictly to the internal affairs of the several colleges, and to their immediate needs in respect to the facilities for instruction. At the meetings of the Board the President shall present his approval or otherwise of any suggestion in these reports, which shall be considered the first official recognition of their existence. These typewritten copies shall be prepared in the offices of the Deans and sent to the President with the original reports. The Committee on Agriculture presented inscriptions for the agricultural building and recommendations as to tablets. After some discussion and changes in ^some cases it was ordered that there should be two inscriptions upon the cornice of the west front: "Industrial education prepares the way for a millenium of labor."—Turner. "The wealth of Illinois is in her soil and her strength lies in its intelligent development."—Draper. That there should be chiseled upon the corner stone the name of the architect, with the date of the erection of the building. That there be set in the wall two tablets, one on either side of the main entrance, the inscription upon one of the tablets to be: This tablet is erected to the memory of

To his persistent efforts as a courageous advocate of scientific education the nation owes the legislation which laid the foundation of this University and of all other land grant colleges. Upon the other tablet to be placed the names of the Board of Trustees and the name of the President of the University. Mr. Bullard reported with regard to the matter of boiler insurance and inspection, which had been referred to Professor Breckenridge and him, that insurance had been effected for three years upon the payment of a premium of $50.00 each year.
