COMMUNICATIONS FROM PRESIDENT DRAPER, CHANGES IN CORPS INSTRUCTION.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS, September 19,1898.

To the Board of Trustees: I recommend the following changes in the Corps of Instruction to take place as of September 1, 1898, viz.: 1. That Jacob Kinzer Shell, M. D., be appointed Professor of Physical Training and Director of the Men's Gymnasium in place of Henry H. Everett, resigned, and that his salary be $1,600 per year. 2. That William Hand Browne, J r . , be appointed Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at $1,200 per year. 3. That Jennette Emeline Carpenter be appointed Director of the Woman's Gymnasium in place of Ella H. Morrison, resigned, for ten months at $90 per month. 4. That Henry Livingston Coar be appointed Instructor in Mathematics in place of Alton C. Burnham, resigned, for ten months at $100 per month. 5. That Lewis Addison Ehoads be promoted from Associate Professor of the German Language and Literature to Professor of same without change of salary. 6. That Edward Charles Schmidt be appointed Instructor in Mechanical Engineering in place of William H. Kavanaugh, resigned, at $75 per month for ten months. 7. That Laboratory assistants be appointed as follows, each for ten months at $50 per month, viz.: In Mechanical Engineering, Edd Charles Oliver. In Electrical Engineering, Harry Curtiss Marble. In Entomology, Edward Clarence Green. In General Engineering Drawing, John Nevins. I also recommend the appointment of Herbert A. Thompson as mechanician A in the departments of Physics and Electrical Engineering for ten months at $75 per month. Also the appointment of Miss Olive Faith Saxton as stenographer in the typewriting bureau at $45 per month. I also recommend that the Board grant leave of absence on account of illness, and without loss of pay, to Miss Lillie Heath, Secretary to the President, for the month of September. Also that the messenger in the President's office be paid $20 per month, and that employment continue during the calendar year.

DEAR SIR:—In accordance with your request Professor Quine and I have gone over the salary list carefully and make the following recommendations for the ensuing year: J . S. Tomlinson, superintendent, $83.33 per month. Miss E. M. Heelan, clerk, $60 per month.
