A proposition in w r i t i n g from t h e N a t i o n a l Medical College, of Chicago, p r e s e n t e d by Dr. S m i t h , a n d a verbal c o m m u n i c a t i o n from t h e College of P h y s i c i a n s a n d S u r g e o n s , of Chicago, were referred for investigation a n d report to a c o m m i t t e e consisting of P r e s i d e n t ^ D r a p e r a n d Messrs. A r m s t r o n g , M c L e a n , R a y m o n d , and Morgan.P r e s i d e n t D r a p e r stated t h a t t h e t e n a n t on t h e south farm, Mr. H e d g e s , t h i n k s it would be b u t fair t h a t h e s h o u l d have some red u c t i o n in his r e n t on account of t h e nearly complete failure of his oats crop. T h e , F a r m C o m m i t t e e was given power to adjust t h e matter. T h e Secretary was i n s t r u c t e d to inform t h e J u l i a F . B u r n h a m H o s p i t a l Association that, while t h e T r u s t e e s felt great interest in t h e success of t h e H o s p i t a l , and were entirely in s y m p a t h y wTith t h e b e n e v o l e n t work t h e Association h a d u n d e r t a k e n , t h e y did riot, after careful consideration of t h e matter, deem it wise to g r a n t t h e use of M i l i t a r y H a l l for t h e c h a r i t y ball, as requested. T h e C o m m i t t e e on B u i l d i n g s and G r o u n d s m a d e t h e following report: To the Board of Trustees: GENTLEMEN: Your Committee on Buildings and Grounds begs leave to report that the work in its charge is progressing satisfactorily.

ASTRONOMICAL OBSERVATORY.

The contracts for the construction of the Observatory have been completed. The contracts for instruments are well under way and the last instrument will be here in a short time. The building has cost $6,654 including extras amounting to $209. We ask that Professor C D . MeLane be paid $100 for services as superintendent in the construction of this building. We recommend that $60 be appropriated for connecting the electric lighting apparatus of the Observatory with the Electric Light Company's lines.

CHEMICAL LABORATORY.

The Committee has taken charge of the improvements in the ' Chemical Laboratory made necessary on account of the fire, upon authority given by the Executive Committee.
