BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS.

The following report was received from the committee on buildings and grounds. To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your committee on buildings and grounds desires to make the following report: Since the adjourned meeting of the board in June the committee has had plans and specifications made for the heating apparatus, the gaspiping, and the plumbing work for Natural History Hall, called for proposals for the work, and let the contracts therefor. The first plans for heating and plumbing had to be revised and reduced in order t h a t the cost of t h e building might not much exceed t h e appropriation for its construction. The architect now estimates t h a t the total work will exceed the appropriation about $2,500. As the cost of providing a way of heating the Chemical Laboratory and of permanently improving t h e heating apparatus of University Hall is included in this expense, it is proper to deduct from this excess t h e amount of the cost of this unusual work which t h e architect estimates at $1,500. T h u would leave a balance of $1,000, to be taken from the other funds, which we hope you will be able to provide so t h a t the work may not be delayed in its completion. The contractor reports t h a t he will have the rooms of t h e main floor of the building done in a few days so t h a t they may be occupied by classes. The building will be fully completed sometime in October. We expect to put t h e grounds in order, and to have some temporary walks laid as soon as t h e building can be occupied. We append the report of Prof. Eicker, architect, and desire to make it a part of our report. Your committee has carefully considered t h e plans for the three proposed new buildings, with the estimates thereon, submitted by Professor Bicker at our last meeting, and recommends t h a t t h e consideration of the Museum and the Engineering Hall be presented to t h e coming legislature, and t h a t appropriations be asked for their erection.
