The fact t h a t t h e second installment of t h e appropriation for t h e building will not be paid to our treasurer till July 1st, has caused t h e committee to delay asking for bids for contracts for heating apparatus, etc. Appropriations and contracts for this purpose will be ready for confirmation at t h e meeting in June. URBANA, I I I . , March 14, 1894.

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: The committee on buildings and grounds recommends t h a t the president of this board and t h e executive committee be authorized and directed to purchase of Mrs. Nina B. Bronson so much of t h e land known as t h e Bronson tract of land, adjacent to t h e University grounds, as lies west of t h e west line of Mathews avenue, formerly Nelson avenue, amounting to 6£ acres, more or less. The committee further recommends t h a t t h e executive committee be authorized to pay for this land $4,500 and the fees of transfer. Respectfully submitted,

N. B. MORRISON, S Buildings and Grounds. The report of t h e committee was approved and an appropriation of $4,500 from current funds was made for this purpose. Mr. Bullard offered t h e following resolution and moved its adoption: Besolved, That t h e committee on buildings and grounds be directed to investigate t h e probability of finding natural gas on t h e University lands, and to expend, if it should be found for the interest of t h e University to do so, not to exceed $500 in this investigation and in utilizing t h e gas, if found. The resolution was adopted, and $500 was appropriated from current funds for this purpose. The committee on instruction, together with t h e committee of t h e faculty, made t h e following report of a plan for a summer school:

SUMMER SCHOOL.

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your committee to which was referred t h e subject of, details of a plan for a summer school to be held at t h e University begs respectfully to report t h a t it has given t h e matter careful attention, and recommends t h a t a summer school be held, to begin June 18th and continue four weeks, with a charge for tuition of $10 for t h e session for each student. I t is assumed t h a t t h e usual laboratory fees and charges will be made to students taking laboratory work. As this is intended as a Univversity, not a private, enterprise, we are of t h e opinion t h a t instructors should receive pay, corresponding to t h e service engaged, at about t h e usual rate for University instruction. T h e rate of about one-tenth t h e regular yearly salary of t h e several professors and instructors is suggested. We further advise t h a t t h e following subjects only be provided for this first year, viz: athletics, zoology, physiology, botany, chemistry, English literature, pedagogy, psychology, political economy and history. I t is recommended t h a t where work is done on university subjects, under t h e tuition of t h e regular university instructors, in amount to equal a full term's work in any course, credit should be given on t h e records o f the University for such work, its value to be determined by such ex-
