UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS.

The committee on buildings and grounds made t h e following report:

URBANA, I I I . , December 13, 1893.

To the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your committee on buildings and grounds begs leave t o report regarding t h e request of Professor Breckeriridge for t h e use of a part of t h e basement of t h e chemical laboratory as a laboratory for t h e mechanical engineering department, recommending t h a t t h e room be so used temporarily, and t h a t $100 be appropriated, to be spent in putting the rooms in order and purchasing materials to be used therein. The committee recommends the payment of $40 to Professor J. M. White, to reimburse him for assistance in preparing drawings and in getting blue prints of furniture, etc., for use in the several departments of the University. Your committee recommends t h e appropriation of $100 for fitting up rooms assigned to the department of pharmacy in t h e chemical laboratory. I t was proposed to do this work in August and September last, but it did not seem necessary t h a t it should be done then: t h e committee deems i t necessary now. Respectfully submitted,

The report of t h e committee was approved, and appropriations were made as therein requested. The proposition for a summer school was highly approved. T h e matter of arranging for t h e same was referred to t h e committee on instruction and t h e faculty of the University, with directions to report at t h e next regular meeting of t h e board. The finance committee made the following report:

To tJie Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois. GENTLEMEN: Your finance committee begs leave to report as follows: 1. As to t h e request for additional instructors in Geometry and Latin in t h e preparatory school, for t h e remainder of t h e year, t h e committee recommends t h a t t h e request be not granted a t present, for t h e reason t h a t t h e condition of our finances will not warrant further expenditures for instruction. 2. As to t h e askings of Professor Breckenridge for additional machinery to be used iu t h e mechanical hall, while admitting t h a t t h e purchase would be desirable, t h e committee recommends t h a t i t be deferred for the present, inasmuch as we have now no funds t h a t can be used for such a purpose. Respectfully submitted, The committee appointed at t h e July meeting to draft resolutions in regard to t h e retiring treasurer. Mr. J. W. Bunn, made t h e following report:
