HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE.

The historical studies are designed t o afford a general view of the history, social organization, and progress of t h e race. They embrace also the history of the a r t s and sciences, a n d of civilization, the principles of civil polity and law, t h e philosophy of history, and the principles of political economy a n d constitutional law. The course occupies six terms in the junior and senior years of the University course.

JUNIOR YEAR.

History of Greece and Rome, and of other ancient nations; Ancient Geography; Mediaeval History; Modern History; European Geography.

SENIOR Y E A R .

Constitutional History of England and the United States; History of Civilization; Political Economy.

PHILOSOPHY AND LOGIC.

The studies of this d e p a r t m e n t require much m a t u r i t y of powers and are therefore confined t o the senior year. Mental philosophy. Analysis and classification of mental phen o m e n a ; theories of perception, consciousness, imagination, memory, judgment, reason. Mental physiology, or connection of body and mind, healthful condition of t h o u g h t , growth a n d decay of mental and moral powers. Philosophy of education, theory of conscience; n a t u r e of moral obligation; m o r a l feeling. The right. The good. Practical ethics; duties. F o r m a t i o n of character. Ancient schools of philosophy; modern schools of philosophy. Influence of philosophy on the progress of civilization, and on modern sciences and a r t s . Principles of logic; conditions of valid thinking; forms of arguments; fallacies and their classification. Inductive and deductive reasoning; principles and methods of investigation. Practical applications of logic in the construction of arguments, in he detection and answer of fallacies, and the formation of t h e 1 abits of thinking and common judgment of life.
