6 War Program of ttu national emergency. A chart showing some of its activities will be found on pages 12 and 13 of this statement. In order to avoid the overlapping and confusion which often arise from the multiplication of agencies, this Committee is working, so far as possible, through existing University organizations; moreover, it has been able to cooperate effectively with State and community defense programs. The main purpose of the Committee is to promote the usefulness of the faculty, the students, and the material resources of the institution to an all-out war program. ACCELERATED PROGRAM The Colleges of Medicine, Dentistry, and P h a r m a c y in Chicago have initiated the quarter system under which they will operate on an all-year basis. This p r o g r a m was adopted to provide an increased supply of physicians, dentists, and pharmacists to meet impending shortages in personnel in these fields. A t Urbana the University has added four weeks to its usual summer session, making a twelve-week p r o g r a m which, for the convenience of special classes of students, is divided into two six-week periods. These adjustments make it possible for a student to shorten the usual four-year program for a baccalaureate degree by a year. CURRICULAR ADJUSTMENTS liversitv W a r Committee a special committee appointed the course offerings of the U n i v e r s i t y and to appraise them in the light of war needs. T h i s committee called to the a t t e n t i o n of students and staff the wealth of t r a i n i n g and experience already provided by e x i s t i n g courses, both for those s e e k i n g basic instruction before being i n d u c t e d and for those d e m a n d i n g specialized work or particular t y p e s of p r e p a r a t i o n for m i l i t a r y or defense service. T h e direct relation of a large p a r t of the work of the University to the more p r e s s i n g needs of the Nation is s t r i k i n g evidence of the s t r e n g t h of the p r o g r a m as a whole. T o meet specific situations a r i s i n g from the war the following new courses are now being offered for c r e d i t :
