T h e last News Letter carried the news of the death of Alice P. Bixby, for m a n y years head cataloger of the Ryerson le ibrary — Lib. — j in Chicago. N o w we have just heard of an interesting provision in r~-£* ~ -~~ r~ "-*~ *7~* «j.»»*» v* a.i iincicMiiig provision in her will whereby a trust is set up for the education of certain heirs with the further provision t h a t upon the completion of their education or in the event they decline to accept the trust benefits, the fund shall be conveyed to the University of Illinois to be invested and the income used as the Alice P. Bixby Scholarship" for the benefit of some worthy, indigent girl, who is a graduate of the public schools of Danville, Illinois. Any balance remaining may be applied to assist in the education of other girls at the University. Miss Bixby had been born in Danville and spent her girlhood there. Lavinia Steel, B.L.S. '02, w h o has been assistant librarian of the Iowa Masonic Library at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, since 1925 until recently, has announced her e n g a g e m e n t to Mr. Frederic Bateman at Greenlock, New Jersey. Frances Simpson, B.L.S. '03, formerly assistant director of the Library School, and now Professor Emeritus, gave several lectures before the class in History of Libraries this spring, and felt on familiar ground, for this was one of her old courses. Miss Simpson will spend the early part of the summer in California, where her address will be Hotel Chelsea, Los Angeles. Returning to U r b a n a late in July she expects a visit from Emma Rhoads ickolay. Bessie E. Stover, '06-'07, is retiring from active library work on June 30th. Early in May the staff at the University of Iowa gave a beautiful afternoon party for her at the University Club.
