the dean or director, upon the work of all freshmen and unclassified students and, if called for by the dean or director, upon all other students whose work is presumably below C. SCHOLASTIC D E L I N Q U E N C I E S 39. Progress Toward the Degree The progress of the student toward his degree is the concern of the dean of the college or director of the school in which the student is enrolled. A student whose progress in his work is unsatisfactory will be subject to action by the dean or director of | the college or school in which he is registered under general provisions adopted by the faculty. This may take the form of a warning, a period of probation, or, if his work is very poor, of dropping from the college or school for scholastic delinquencies. Each college office, on request, will inform the student regarding the scholarship regulations of that college. 40. Delinquencies in English (For students entering the University between September 1941 and September 1944) a. During the years 1941-1942 and 1942-1943 all students whose rating in the freshman placement test in rhetoric is below passing are required to register in sections of Rhetoric 1 which meet four times a week instead of three. They shall receive, however, only the usual three credits. b. For the same period all students receiving the grade of D in the first semester of Rhetoric 1 are required to register in sections of Rhetoric 2 meeting four times a week. They shall likewise receive three credits. c. After September 1, 1941, and continuing indefinitely thereafter all students who receive a grade of D in Rhetoric 2 are required to take an extra one-semester course carrying three credit hours (Rhetoric 5). All transfer students whose grade at another institution for their last semester in required rhetoric (equivalent to Rhetoric 2) is D (or the equivalent) are required to take the third semester course or pass a proficiency examination. d. Beginning September 1, 1943, no student who fails to pa > the placement test in rhetoric, given at the begini.mr of each semester, will be allowed to register in Rhetoric 1. He shall he responsible for making up this deficiency by tutoring, correspondence Study, or in any other way he may choose. A threehour non credit elective course shall be offered each semester in which students may register to prepare themselves to pass the placement test. A student who fails to pass the placement test by the beginning of his third J incster must withdraw from the University until he dors pass it.
