The Wren Building of the College of William and Mary in WU- I Iiamsburg is an excellent enduring example of Williamsburg archi-I lecture which was the inspiration for the lilini Union. passenger elevators in the west wing of the original building, the marks of the carver's tools can easily be seen. J T h e cupola, the traditional hallmark of the lilini Union, is a Williamsburg derivation. Similar constructions can be'. seen on the three impressive public buildings in Colonial Williamsburg. It was used to advantage by the designers, of the lilini Union to house the University's historic chapel bell, and the "old clock," the gift of the class of 1878. j Architects Howard Lovewell Cheney and John Calvin Leavell captured President Willard's vision for the lilini Union, "to provide a distinguished social center for campus life, which it is hoped will furnish not only service but real inspiration for better living and a finer University." In this modern age, the rare beauty and simple but dignified way of early American life is perpetuated.
