organized course in Physical Science in the General Division, and that he be paid a salary of $1,375 (this represents one-fourth of his present salary) in addition to the retiring allowance of $2,714 to which he will be entitled under the Statutes. Accordingly I recommend that Professor Hopkins be recalled into active service for one year from September I, 1941, for the purpose and under the conditions herein indicated. O n m o t i o n of M r . MATTERS PRESENTED BY PRESIDENT WILLARD

T h e Board considered the following matters presented by the President of t h e University.

SABBATICAL LEAVES OF ABSENCE DURING 19 4 1 - 1 9 4 2 ( i ) I t is recommended that the following members of the staff be given sabbatical leaves of absence during the academic year 1941-1942 in accordance with the provisions of the University Statutes and on the terms and for the period indicated in each case: I. Leaves of absence for members of the extension staff: Grace B. Armstrong, Assistant Professor, H o m e Economics Extension, August 1, 1041, to February 1, 1942, on full pay. This leave is also subject to the approval of the United States Department of Agriculture. II. Leaves of absence on one-half pay: Dorothy E. Bowen, Assistant Professor of Music, one year from September I, 1941, on one-half pay. A. S. Daniels, Assistant Professor of Physical Education, first semester, 1941-1942, on one-half p a y ; second semester without pay. Professor Daniels' salary is paid jointly by the University and the Athletic Association, and this leave on one-half pay applies only to that portion (one-half) of salary paid by the University. J. L. Doob, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, one year from September 1, 1941, on one-half pay. M. Goldhaber, Assistant Professor of Physics, first semester, 1941-1942, on one-half pay; second semester without pay. This leave is recommended subject to cancellation by the President of t h e University on recommendation of the H e a d of the Department of Physics if conditions in that department (i.e., shortage of personnel and inability to find a satisfactory substitute) make it inadvisable for Professor Goldhaber to be away. T h e leave without pay for the second semester is requested, and is so recommended, conditional on the candidate's receiving a Guggenheim fellowship for which he has applied. H . N. Hillebrand, Professor of English and H e a d of the Department, first semester, 1941-1942, on one-half pay. J. G. Randall, Professor of History, second semester, 1941-1942, on o n e half pay.
