AGREEMENTS FOR COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATIONS (17) A report of the approval of the following agreements for cooperative investigations: 1. Dow Chemical Company of Midland, Michigan, a cooperative investigation of the effect of different grain fumigants on the germinating quality of different strains of hybrid corn, by the Agricultural Experiment Station and the State Natural History Survey. The agreement is drawn for a period of one year from September 15, 1940, and the Company has agreed to contribute $200 for the support of this study. 2. Association of American Railroads and the Rail Manufacturers' Technical Committee, for cooperative investigation of the causes of failure of railroad rails in service, for one year from January I, 1941. Each agency will contribute $9,000 for the expense of the investigation.

On motion of Mr. Mayer, these agreements were approved.

GIFT OF MR. A N D MRS. MERLE J . TREES (18) Pursuant to the terms of the resolution of the Executive Committee adopted December 18, 1937 (Minutes, page 587), Mr. and Mrs. Merle J. Trees offer as their gift for the year 1940 a painting, " M a d a m e de Pienne," by Francois Clouet, valued at $18,000. This is the painting which was purchased in 1939 (as reported to the Boaid of Trustees February 11, 1939 (Minutes, page 231) to be added to the "Emily Nichols Trees (Class of 1995) and Merle J a y Trees (Class of 1907) Collection" which was started by them in 1937.

On motion of Mr. Cleary, this gift was accepted, and the President of the University was requested to express to Mr. and Mrs. Trees the thanks of the University for this generous continuation of their gift of an important art collection to the University.

F U N D S FROM ROCKEFELLER F O U N D A T I O N FOR N E U R O P S Y C H I A T R Y INSTITUTE (19) The Rockefeller Foundation has made a grant of $8,000 to the University for the development of neurology and neurosurgery for the balance of the current academic year, ending August 31, 1941. Under the authority granted me by the
