The lone woman in a graduating c l a s s ©f 700 e n g i n e e r s , Betty Lou Bailey received h e r B . S . in Mechanical Engineering f r o m the University of Illinois in 1950.

Miss Bailey has worked since graduation with the General E l e c t r i c Company w h e r e she has held down a v a r i e t y of e n g i n e e r ing r e s p o n s i b i l i t i e s

Most of her f i r s t ten y e a r s with G. E . w e r e spent working at the l a r g e J e t Engine Dep a r t m e n t in Evendale, Ohio. She worked h e r f i r s t y e a r in the G. E . T e s t p r o g r a m a t Miss

Schenectady, N. Y. w h e r e she r a n production t e s t s on a n t i - a i r c r a f t gunsights.

Bailey a l s o did testing work during that f i r s t y e a r with the l a r g e System Turbin Department in Schenectady and the Switchwear Division in Philadelphia. Since l a s t y e a r , M i s s Bailey has been with G. E . 's Valley F o r g e Space Technology Center where she works on the design of the Nimbus weather s a t e l l i t e .

The daughter of an e n g i n e e r , Miss Bailey f i r s t b e c a m e i n t e r e s t e d in an engineering c a r e e r while attending Chicago's Morgan P a r k High School.

She is a r e g i s t e r e d professional engineer in Ohio and New York and a m e m b e r of the A m e r i c a n Society of Mechanical E n g i n e e r s and the Ohio Society of P r o f e s s i o n a l E n g i n e e r s . Holder of a patent on the design of an exhaust nozzle for the J - 9 3 engine, Miss Bailey is also active in A l t r u s a , an international w o m e n ' s s e r v i c e club.
