PATENT O N DISCOVERY BY D. W . KERST President Willard presented a statement on a discovery made by P r o fessor D . W . Kerst in connection with his research for the W a r Department. This matter was referred to the Committee on Patents with power to act. T h e President of the Board appointed M r . Livingston to act as chairman of the Committee on Patents during the absence of Mr. Adams. Later the same day the Committee decided that pursuant to the provisions of Contract N o . OEM-241 between the University of Illinois and the United States Government the University will apply for the patent in question with the understanding that if the application is allowed and a patent is issued the University will issue to the United States Government the kind of license described in the aforementioned contract.

DATE OF A N N U A L MEETING

The P>oard set the date of the annual meeting as Saturday, March 20, 1943, in Chicago. APPOINTMENTS MADE BY T H E PRESIDENT

The Secretary presented also for record the following list of appointments made by the President of the University.

BAER, CHARLES EDWARD, Instructor in Physical Education for Men, begin-

ning February 8, 1943, and continuing through June 30, 1943, at a salary at the rate of two hundred dollars ($200) a month, in addition to eighty dollars ($80) a month paid by the Athletic Association, for which the University assumes no responsibility (this supersedes his previous appointment). (February 12, 1943)1 BEDRICK, THEODORE, Assistant in Mathematics, on one-third time, for five months beginning February 1, 1943, at a salary at the rate of sixty dollars ($60) a month (this supersedes his previous appointment in Mathematics). (February 16, 1943) BORMAN, ALECK, Assistant in Chemistry, on one-half time, for five months beginning February I, 1943, at a salary at the rate of sixty dollars ($60) a month. (February 16, 1943)

BOYER, DALE TREVOR, Cashier in the Bursar's Division of the Business

Office, beginnnig February 1, 1943, and continuing through August 31, 1943, subject to University Civil Service rules, at a salary at the rate of one hundred thirty dollars ($130) a month (this supersedes his previous appointment). (February 19, 1043) BUNCH, M. JOSEPHINE, Assistant in History, on one-half time, for five months beginning February I, 1943, at a salary at the rate of sixty dollars ($60) a month. (February 16, 1943)

CAHALAN, THOMAS HAROLD, Library Assistant in the Loan Department of

the Library, beginning February 15, 1943, and continuing through August 31,
