no BOARD OF TRUSTEES PURCHASE OF LAND IN CHAMPAIGN [October 17 (24) A recommendation from the Dean of the College of Engineering and the Director of the Physical Plant Department that the University purchase the strip of land between Wright and Sixth Streets, Champaign, just north of the Vivarium Building, which is a part of the right-of-way abandoned by the Illinois Traction System, now the Illinois Terminal Railroad, at a price of $1,500. This is a logical site for construction in the near future of a betatron (electron accelerator) laboratory for the Department of Physics. There is a reserve of $12,000 set aside by the Board of Trustees on November 18, 1941 (Minutes, page 604), for the electron accelerator project, but this reserve is subject to appropriation for specific purposes. I recommend authorization of the purchase of this land and the assignment of $1,500 from this special reserve for the purpose. O n motion of Mr. Adams, this purchase was authorized and the appropriation was made as recommended, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Adams, Mr. Davis, Mr. Fornof, M r s . Grigsby, Mr. Jensen, M r . K a r r a k e r , M r . Livingston, Dr. M e y e r ; no, n o n e ; absent, M r . Cleary, Mr. Green, M r . Wieland. CHANGES IN VACATIONS (25) The University Senate Committee on Calendar recommends the following changes in the vacation schedule of the Urbana departments for this year: 1. Eliminate the Thanksgiving vacation period, with the provision that there shall be no classes on Thanksgiving Day. 2. Stagger the beginning and ending of the Christmas vacation period as follows: Dismiss at twelve noon on Tuesday, December 15, undergraduate students of junior and senior standing, unclassified and irregular students, graduate students, students in the College of Law, and students in the Library School. Dismiss at twelve noon on Wednesday, December 16, undergraduate students of freshman and sophomore standing. Begin classes for undergraduate students of junior and senior standing, unclassified and irregular students, graduate students, students in the College of Law, and students in the Library School, at twelve noon, Tuesday, December 29. Begin classes for undergraduate students of freshman and sophomore standing at twelve noon on Wednesday, December 30. 3. Hold no classes on Friday, January 1, New Year's Day. On motion of Mr. Davis, these changes were authorized. EXPENDITURES FROM GENERAL REVENUE F U N D T h e President reported informally on a statement from the State Department of Finance on the total amount allotted to and expended by the University from the General Revenue F u n d of the State. COMMITTEE ON CIVIL SERVICE A N D WAGES M r . Livingston, for the Committee on Civil Service and W a g e s , made a report of progress in the consideration of classifications of positions and the organization of employees' councils. EXECUTIVE S E S S I O N O n motion of Mr. K a r r a k e r , the Board went into executive session and considered the following matters presented by the President of the University. T h e representatives of the General Advisory Committee were requested to be present during this presentation.
