4IO BOARD OF TRUSTEES [ M a y 16 CONTRACT FOR COAL H A N D L I N G A N D TRANSPORTATION EQUIPMENT FOR ABBOTT POWER PLANT (19) T h e Director of the Physical Plant and the Vice-President and Comptroller recommend award of a contract for $21,641.92 to McElroy-Roland Machinery Company, 719 East Jefferson Street, Springfield, for a coal handling and transportation unit for the Abbott Power Plant. This is mobile, tractor-bulldozer equipment for use in handling coal for stock-piling at the power plant. Funds are available in the state capital appropriations to the University for the current biennium 1957-59. I concur. On motion of Mr. Harewood, this contract was authorized by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Clement, Mr. Harewood, Mr. Herrick, Mr. Hughes, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Pogue, Mr. Swain, Mrs. Watkins, Mr. Wilkins, Mr. Williamson; no, none; absent, Mr. Stratton. CONTRACTS FOR COAL PURCHASES FOR ABBOTT P O W E R PLANT (20) T h e Director of Purchases, the Vice-President and Comptroller, and the Director of the Physical Plant recommend award of the following contracts for 158,000 tons of coal screenings to be delivered to the Abbott Power Plant during the period July 1, 1959, through June 30, 1961: Location of Mine F.o.b.Mine T h e United Electric Coal Companies, Chicago 24,000 tons @ $4.65 Danville $111 600 00 Republic Coal and Coke Company, Chicago 109,000 tons @ $4.91 Hillery 535 190 00 Bell and Zoller Coal Company, Chicago 25,000 tons @ $5.01 Murdock 125 250 00 Freight rate on 158,000 tons @ $1.43 225 940 00 Total Cost $997 980 00 Sealed bids on uniform specifications were opened on April 24, 1959. Invitations to bid were sent to twenty-three producers, and sales agencies were solicited by newspaper advertisements. The bids are evaluated in the terms of the number of British Thermal Units purchased for one cent based on guaranteed analysis. A continuous check is maintained to insure compliance with specifications. It is advantageous to have contracts with three sources of supply to be assured of delivery of coal at all times. T h e bid from the United Electric Coal Companies is for the year 1959-60 only. If this mine is in operation on July 1, i960, the University of Illinois will have the option of purchasing an additional 24,000 tons at the quoted price. Should this option be exercised, tonnage purchased from the Republic Coal and Coke Company would be correspondingly reduced. The prices quoted are based on present wage scales and are subject to increase or decrease in event that wage contracts now in effect are changed. Any such change will affect the price to the extent that production costs are increased or decreased by new contracts. T h e University may cancel the balance of the purchase contract if it believes that any price adjustment is not justified. I concur and recommend that the Comptroller and the Secretary of the Board be authorized to execute contracts as recommended, subject to the approval by the Governor as required by the state constitution.
