(2) T h e Dean of the College of Liberal A r t s and Sciences recommends the appointment of Dr. Ralph E. Matlaw, presently Assistant Professor of Russian at Princeton University, as Associate Professor of Russian on indefinite tenure and Head of the Department of Russian, beginning September 1, 1960, at an annual salary of $12,000 on " A " basis. It is also recommended that he be given a summer appointment beginning July 15, i960, through August 31, i960, at a total salary of $2,000 for the period, so that his services will be available in organizing the program of the new Department of Russian. This recommendation is made after consultation with the appropriate members of the faculty and is endorsed by the Vice-President and Provost and the Dean of the Graduate College. I concur.

On motion of Mr. Clement, this appointment was approved.

RUSSELL, Professor of Geography and Head of the Department (reappointment; he has served since October 1, 1958, when he was appointed to fill a vacancy created by the resignation from the University of Professor Marcus M. (4) I recommend that the following members of the staff be given sabbatical leaves of absence during the academic year 1960-61 in accordance with the provisions of the University of Illinois Statutes and on the terms and for the period indicated. The programs of research, study, and travel for which these leaves are requested have been examined by the University Research Board which advises the President in such matters. A number of other applications for sabbatical leaves during 1960-61 are still under consideration, and additional recommendations may be submitted at a subsequent meeting.
