CENTURY OF PROGRESS EXPOSITION, 1 9 3 4 (3) A recommendation that an appropriation of $5200, or so much thereof as may be necessary, be made from the Reserve and Contingent Fund to meet the necessary expenses of the University's exhibit at the Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago.

On motion of Dr. Meyer, this appropriation was made, by the following vote: Aye, Mr. Barr, Mr. Barrett, Mr. Blair, Mrs. Freeman, Mrs. Hopkins, Mr. Karraker, Dr. Meyer, Mr. Trees, Mr. Williams; no, none; absent, Mr. Armstrong, Mr. Horner.

ADJUSTMENT IN BUSINESS OFFICE BUDGET (4) A report that the Comptroller has been authorized to expend not to exceed J400 more than the present expense and equipment budget of the Business Office provides, between May 12 and September I, for extra help in the Purchasing Office, which is necessary because of the heavy demands upon that division during the current year. The situation will be reviewed in September to determine whether it is necessary to make this relief permanent.

This report was received for record.

BUREAU OF COMMUNITY PLANNING (5) A recommendation that there be established in the College of Fine and Applied Arts a Bureau of Community Planning which will have the following objectives: 1. To be a purely public service and educational agency designed to stimulate and promote public interest and intelligent procedure in community planning. 2. To carry on research (by the use of professors and qualified graduate students) in the field of community planning. 3. To gather data in this field and to make back-ground surveys pertinent to the intelligent planning and development of Illinois communities. 4. To summarize and bring to the attention of the people the results of such research. 5. To offer certain consultation service to communities that wish to organize planning agencies or facilities. (It will not be the purpose of the Bureau to plan communities or to offer any technical service normally performed by professional architects, engineers, and planners.) The staff of this Bureau will consist of: a director (preferably an existing administrative officer), a Community Planning Adviser (who need not be appointed for the present biennium), the Staff in Landscape Architecture, and cooperating from other Departments the following: a Geographer, a Geologist (familiar with Illinois problems), a Political Economist (versed in municipal problems), an Economist, an Accountant, a Sociologist (urban and rural), an Agriculturist (social and economic), a Lawyer, an Architect, a Statistician (occasional help), an Engineer (versed in municipal and planning problems). This Bureau will not involve an increase in the budget of the University nor of the College for the year 1934-35.

On motion of Mr. Barr, this bureau was established as recommended.

PHYSICAL PLANT DEPARTMENT (6) A recommendation that the name of the Supervising Architect's Office be changed to Physical Plant Department, said department to have general supervision of the operation and maintenance of the University's physical plant in Urbana and Chicago, and to be responsible for all functions heretofore assigned under the statutes of the Board of Trustees to the Supervising Architect's Office.

On motion of Mr. Barrett, this recommendation was approved.
