(14) The following report of gifts to the University received since the last report: From the National Research Council $2,000 to aid in the investigations which Professor H. F. Moore of the Engineering Experiment Station is conducting, under the joint auspices of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering and the American Society for Testing Materials, upon the effect of repeated stresses on nickelchromium steels under high temperatures. From Standard Brands, Incorporated, the sum of $1,750.00 for the continuation of a study by the College of Medicine of the effect of yeast on the digestive tract. (Original gift accepted by the Board April 10, 1929, Minutes, page 161.) From American Society for Testing Materials, the sum of $1,000 for the continuation of an investigation of cast-iron pipe. (Original gift accepted by the Board October 12, 1927, Minutes, page 473, and a second gift from the Society accepted by the Board October 17, 1930, Minutes, page 98.) From the Monsanto Chemical Works, the sum of $1,000 for a special research assistantship in chemistry for research in high-pressure gas reactions for the year 1931-1932. (Original gift accepted by the Board October 17, 1930, Minutes, page 99.) From Bauer and Black, the sum of $750 for the establishment of a fellowship for x-ray research on materials used in the manufacture of surgical supplies. (Gift for year 1930-1931 accepted by the Board June 10, 1930, Minutes, page 605.) From Institute of American Meat Packers the sum of $500 for the continuation of an investigation of the growth of and toxin formation by Clostricium botulinum in certain canned meat products. (Original gift accepted by the Board September 18, 1929, Minutes, page 358.) From American Concrete Institute the sum of $445.20 for the continuation of an investigation on reinforced concrete columns. (Original gift accepted by the Board on February 5, 1930, page 509.) GIFT FROM THE CHEMICAL FOUNDATION

(15) At the meeting of the Board on June 26,1931, (Minutes, page 371) a report was made of the gift of $625 from the Chemical Foundation of N e w York to help finance the completion of the work of Professor Roger Adams on synthetic preparations to replace chaulmoogra oil in the treatment of leprosy. This report should have read $2500; the $625 which was received at that time was thefirstpayment of the full amount. This report was received for record.

OFFER OF FORESTRY TRACT FROM MRS. A. N. ABBOTT

(16) Mrs. A. N . Abbott of Morrison, Illinois, offers the University a tract of approximatelyfifty-fiveacres of land known as the Abbott Forestry Tract in Whiteside County which her late husband, Alfred N . Abbott, developed as a forestry experiment. This is the same land which Mr. Abbott offered to sell the University two or three years ago. The Dean of the College of Agriculture recommends that the University accept this land to be used by the Agricultural Experiment Station as an experimental and demonstrational forestry area. The acceptance of this property would involve an expenditure of approximately $700 to fence the property and do some clean-up work. H e estimates that after the first year the maintenance would not cost more than $350 a year. O n m o t i o n of M r . Blair, this matter w a s referred to the President of the University for consideration a n d report. O n m o t i o n of M r . Trees, President C h a s e w a s requested to m a k e a survey of university activities a w a y f r o m the University a n d to report to the B o a r d .
