The payment of $200 additional salary to the Acting Director during the second semester. 2. The payment of J100 additional salary to the Acting Director during the summer. On motion of Mrs. Grigsby, these adjustments were authorized. EXTENSION OF AGREEMENTS FOR COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATIONS (11) O n recommendation of Dean Ketchum I recommend that the following agreements for cooperative investigations in the Engineering Experiment Station be extended as indicated in each case: 1. Investigation offissuresin steel rails (approved by the Board in May, 1928) for one year from September 31, 1928. (This agreement is with the Utilities Research Commission.) 2. Investigation of steam and hot water heating (approved by the Board, March 9, 1926) for one year from April 1, 1929. (This agreement is with the National Boiler and Radiator Manufacturers' Association and the Illinois Master Plumbers' Association.) O n motion of D r . Noble, these extensions were authorized. INVESTIGATION OF USE OF PHOSPHATE ROCK AS FERTILIZER (12) O n recommendation of Dean Mumford I recommend acceptance of an offer from the R u h m Phosphate and Chemical Company and the Thomson Phosphate Company of $750 a year each (a total of $1,500 a year) for a period of three years, payable in quarterly amounts of $187.50, for research work on certain unsolved problems connected with the use of phosphate rock as fertilizer, and recommend approval of the agreement for this investigation. The agreement is of the form and character hitherto authorized by the Board for similar investigations. On motion of Mr. Simpson, this agreement was authorized. OFFER OF RESEARCH FUND FROM ILLINOIS CANNERS ASSOCIATION (13) The Illinois Canners Association has offered to increase the fund they have been giving the University from $3,000 to $5,000 a year for a period of five years, beginning March 1, 1929, to continue the investigations which have been conducted by the Department of Horticulture on sweet corn. O n recommendation of Dean Mumford and Professor Blair I recommend acceptance of this offer. O n motion of M r . Trees, this offer w a s accepted. BIOGRAPHIES OF FORMER PRESIDENTS (14) The publication of the biographies of former Regents Gregory and Peabody (the latter having been published by the University) suggested to m e the idea of the publication of similar biographies of former Presidents Draper and James. I suggested to Honorable Harlan H. Horner of Albany, formerly President Draper's secretary, and to President James's son, Dean Herman G. James of the University of Nebraska, that i they would prepare such biographies, acceptable to the University, the Unif versity would undertake to publish them. I present the idea for the approval of the Board and request an expression of willingness on the part of the Board to publish the volumes, when they are ready, in form and content similar to the biography of Regent Peabody. O n motion of M r s . E v a n s , the B o a r d approved the general policy involved in publishing these biographies. PATENTS OF DISCOVERIES BY MEMBERS OF THE STAFF (15) The Committee on Patents has recently had under consideration three discoveries which have been made by members of the staff, viz: 1. A device and process for sewage treatment developed under the direction of Dr. A. M . Buswell, Professor of Sanitary Chemistry. A. The device is a circulating system which prevents the accumulation of scum and foam in digestion tanks, makes possible the collection of valuable gases, and perheretofore. mits the construction of Imhoff tanks with thirty per cent greater efficiency than
