This recommendation is made with the advice of the search committee, 1 and after consultation with the dean of the college, and the Executive Committee of the department. The vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval. On motion of Mrs. Gravenhorst, this appointment was approved. Chair, Department of Philosophy, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Chicago (13) The chancellor at Chicago, after consultation with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has recommended the appointment of W. D. Hart, presently professor of philosophy, as chair of the Department of Philosophy, beginning September 1, 1995, on an academic year service basis with an administrative stipend of $5,000. Dr. Hart will continue to hold the rank of professor on indefinite tenure on an academic year service basis at an annual rate of $69,000. He has served as acting chair since September 1994. This recommendation is made after consultation with the dean of the college and the Executive Committee of the department. The vice president for academic affairs concurs. I recommend approval. On motion of Mrs. Gravenhorst, this appointment was approved. Head, Department of Biological Sciences, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Chicago (14) The chancellor at Chicago, after consultation with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, has recommended the appointment of Arnold Kaplan, presently professor and chair, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Arkansas, as head of the Department of Biological Sciences, beginning August 21, 1995, on an academic year service basis with an administrative stipend of $5,000. Dr. Kaplan will also be appointed as professor of biological sciences on indefinite tenure on an academic year service basis at an annual rate of $94,000. For the summer of 1995, Professor Kaplan will receive a one-month appointment at one-ninth of his annual rate ($11,000) effective July 21, 1995. Dr. Kaplan will succeed Sidney B. Simpson, Jr., who has been named dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at UIC. This recommendation is made with the advice of a search committee 2 and after consultation with the dean of the college and members of the departmental faculty.
