234 BOARD OP TRUSTEES- [February 2i,s RECEIPTS'FROM-SMITH; FAR PUS (7) A letter from Professor J. G. Mosier relating to; the income from the- Smith farms during the last y e a r : February 13, 19*7 President Edinmid J. James, University of Illinois DEAR PRESIDENT J A M E S : I am enclosing a statement of the receipts and expenditures of the Smith farms since July, first. As you see by the report, the corn at the F i s h e r farm has not been sold, and I have placed upon it an estimated! value of $1100. Six bushels of clover seed produced on that farm* still remain unsold, but it will be used for seed this year unless the farm is sold before seeding takes place-. We- still have the clover seed for the Ludlow and St. Joseph farms, but this will be sold, in a short time. It is now being cleaned and put in good shape. The farms-did not produce quite as large an income as last year, but, considering the unfavorable conditions, I think they have done very well. T h e Fisher farm; including t h e estimated value of the corn and clover seed, produced a net income of $9.78 an, acre, the Champaign? farm,, $10,893 Ludlow, $7.16, and St. Joseph, $9.81. The same tenants a r e to be retained-, and the, contracts are already in the hands o,f Mr. Morey for their signatures. Clover is not a large money crop ordinarily. That fact has cut down the income t©; a certain extent. There were about ioo; acres in clover on these farms* and the yield-of seed this year was low. Of course, we expect the yield of corn next year which follows the clover to be much increased. In the case of the Ludlow farrn^ however, there: w e r e ' 5 5 acres of. clover from which w e will get no returns, and I question very much whether it will be a wise plan to leave very much clover because of the fact that the land is liable to be sold at any time. I presume that the rest of these farms will be sold during the present year, and it will probably not be well to do much in the way of soil improvement, other than t h e application of manure produced on the farm, and ordinary good tillage; Very truly yours, J.
