This pamphlet contains two addresses made by me during the past year to the American Society of Zoologists and to the American Fisheries Society, respectively, the first under the title of "The Work of the Illinois Biological Station," and the second on "The Investigation of a River System in the Interest of Its Fisheries." Respectfully submitted, STEPHEN A. FOKBES, Director of Laboratory. APPROPRIATIONS FOR REPAIRS AND BUILDINGS. 11. The following letter from Professor J. M. White, supervising architect: UKBANA, I I I . , Dec. 12, 1910. President Edmund J. James, University of Illinois: I desire that the following appropriations be made immediately for the purposes stated: For the necessary shoring and repairs on the east and west towers of University Hall $500 001 For repairs in the toilet rooms of University Hall 175 00 For the construction of a room in the pumping station, which will serve as a dormitory for the men on day duty whom we desire to have sleeping close to the fire apparatus 400 00' For the further investigation of the Auditorium acoustics 500 00 For additional lighting in the business office in the Natural History building 70 00 To pay off the deficit on the 1909 Senior memorial 37 OS . (This deficit is due to the fact that $50.00 worth of tile purchased for the fountain was lost from Engineering hall, and the order had to be duplicated.) The work in connection with the remodeling of the Gymnasium has been very difficult to estimate, and the improvements made have necessitated exceeding the special appropriation of $8,000.00 by about (which sum I request be appropriated) 500 00 Total .' $2,182 08 The contract price on the Boiler House and Ceramics building has never been divided between the two buildings. It has always been stated that only $10,000.00 could be paid from the Ceramics appropriation. The cost of the building, according to the business office records and my estimates of amounts due, is $12,412.87. Of this amount, $10,052.52 has been charged against the Ceramics funds, and the balance of $2,360.35 remains unpaid, and there is no balance on the State heat and light appropriation with which to meet it. The Boiler House appropriation upon which we are working amounts to $75,000.00. Our estimates for the expenditure of this sum aggregated $74,800.00. We have already paid $63,612.94, leaving a balance on the books of $11,387.06; with bills outstanding amounting to $10,806.14. This leaves a balance of $570.92 against which the labor pay-rolls since the 1st of December must be charged; and there will probably be some bills for material which will use up this balance and $500.00 more. Appropriations should be made to cover these deficits on the two buildings amounting to $2,412.87 on the Ceramics building; and about $500.00 on the Boiler House, making a total of $5,094.95.
