UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS.

M E E T I N G OF MARCH 9, 1897.

ADJOURNED SESSION, A P R I L 22,

1897.

The board met at the Palmer House, Chicago, at 10 o'clock a. m., Thursday, April 22d, pursuant to adjournment and adjourned to meet forthwith at the Sherman House, Chicago. When the board met at the Sherman House, pursuant to adjournment, the following members were present: Messrs. Armstrong, Bullard, McKay, McLean, Morrison, Pearce, Raymond, Smith and Mrs. Carriel and Mrs. Flower; those absent were Governor Tanner and Mr. Inglis. President Draper made an informal report with regard to the condition of the appropriation bills. He also stated that acting upon authority given him at the last meeting of the board, he had engaged Mr. Gr. E. Grardner, of Worcester, Massachusetts, at a salary of $2,000 a year, and Mr. C. C. Pickett, of Chicago, at a salary of $1,500 a year, as instructors in the law school, the term of service to begin September 1, 1897. On motion of Mr. Armstrong, these appointments were made. The matter of the appointment of Miss Katherine Sharp as librarian of the University, presented by President Draper, was referred to a special committee consisting of President Draper, Mrs. Flower, and Mr. McLean, with power to act. It was voted that Professor S. W. Shattuck be paid $400 a year out of the funds of the School of Medicine for his services as business manager of that department of the University. A petition was presented from many of the students of the college of engineering desiring that Mr. Groodenough, who had received an offer of a higher salary elsewhere, be retained as instructor in the University, but no action was taken thereon.
