1898.] PROCEEDINGS OF BOARD OF TRUSTEES. 269^ The action of the Committee was approved and its recommendations were adopted. An appropriation of $200,00 for the purposesnamed was made, The Committee on Buildings and Grounds reported that the Heating, Lighting, and Power Plant was nearly completed and that the cost of the plant had exceeded the $80,000.00 appropriated by the State for this purpose by about $7,500.00. The Committee recommended that to meet the deficiency there be appropriated $5,000,00 from the equipment fund for the College of Engineering and $2,500.00 from the general fund. This recommendation was adopted and the sums named were appropriated. The Committee on Buildings and Grounds reported that the cost of putting up lightning rods had exceeded the appropriation by $135.44, and asked that this additional amount be appropriated. The Committee also recommended that lightning rods be put on the farm house, the Observatory, and the buildings of the Heating. Plant at an expense of not to exceed $75.00, Both these amounts were appropriated as recommended. The Committee on Buildings and Grounds reported back President Draper's recommendations (see page 259) with, regard to the management of the Central Heating Plant and advised that they be approved. The report of the Committee was adopted. The Committee on Buildings and Grounds asked that $115.00 be appropriated for completing the lighting of the Gymnasium, and the amount was appropriated. The Committee on Buildings and Grounds reported that Messrs. Kicker and White had incurred, upon the order of the Committee, in connection with certain improvements and repairs, expenses to the amount of $71.00, and that Mr. White had incurred expenses to the amount of $127.44. The Committee recommended an appropriation to reimburse these gentlemen for their expenses, and also that $150.00 be appropriated to pay Mr. White for services in connection with said improvements and repairs. The recommendations of the Committee were adopted and the sums named were appropriated. The Committee on Buildings and Grounds reported that it had made some investigations with regard to the expense of an independent water plant for the University, and had found that such a. plant would cost about $10,000. The Committee recommended that, inasmuch as it was not advisable to take so large a sum from current University funds, an attempt be made to secure from the Legislature at its next session an appropriation for such plant.
