CULTURAL LANDSCAPE TREATMENT PLAN ROBERT ALLERTON PARK, MONTICELLO, ILLINOIS Transformation From Open Field to Forested Landscape When Robert Allerton began making improvements, he created a designed landscape in open fields. Today the surrounding forest has grown up, presenting new challenges for understanding design intent and making treatment recommendations. The photographs below, all taken from the upper level of the House of the Golden Buddhas, illustrate changes in the Fu Dog Garden. 1932 (HGFC – 1) Firs were initially planted to define the space. 1944 (HGFC-8) Firs have reached intended size and shape. 2001 Firs have become over mature, dominating the space and overshadowing the Fu Dogs.
