word, there are educational forces which go directly to the m a k i n g of money and indirectly to the making of m< a. And t h e r e are o t h e r e d u c a t i o n a l forces which go more directly to t h e training of men, and indirectly to the m a k i n g of money. W e need t h e m all. T h e s e forces are to be cultivated harmoniously. T h e d e p a r t m e n t s which are the weakest must be given the most help, to the end t h a t all of these forces may be cultivated h a r m o n i o u s l y and university ideals be measurably attained. Illinois h a s great, rich farms to cultivate, and it is importa n t t h a t they be cultivated advantageously. S h e has horses, and cattle and swine to feed, and it is a great service to h e r p e o p l e to show how to do it so as to p r o d u c e the most profit. S h e has vast s t r u c t u r e s to erect, and it is a great service to the state to teach y o u n g men and w o m e n how to erect them out of the materials at hand, so t h a t they will be safe, pleasing to the sight, and suited to their uses. S h e has great public highways, and water systems, and sewage systems, and electrical plants, and no end of machinery to construct. W h e n she teaches h e r sons and d a u g h t e r s to do these things she is not only p r e p a r i n g t h e m for h o n o r a b l e and profitable vocations, but for vocations which are imperative to the health, p l e a s u r e and intellectual, industrial, and moral d e v e l o p m e n t of her people.
