T h e s e i n t e r e s t s arc • in the wide variety of o p p o r t u n i t i e s offered to unde aduates, either in the Liberal A r t s , the Liberal or a m i x t u r e of t h e t w o . T , Colleg* of Liberal A r t s a n d Sciences has t w o parfunctions. First, it enrolls s t u d e n t s in specialized and pre-pro il c u r r i c u l a ; for i n s t a n c e , pie-medical. pre-law, and c h e m i s t r y . Secondly, it p r o v i d e s the r e s o u r c e s for a liberal e d u c a t i o n . L i b e r a l m e a n s a p r o g r a m leading to a well-rounded personal d e v e l o p m e n t : that is, a p r o g r a m in which studies e m p h a s i z e factors t h a t c o n t r i b u t e to a general k n o w l e d g e a n d i n t e r p r e t a t i o n of the forces, tendens conflicts, and p r o b l e m s of life, r a t h e r t h a n t h o s e leading to specific individual c a r e e r s . B u t t h e principal w o r k of the College is its w o r k w i t h a b r o a d , g e n e r a l , c u l t u r a l t y p e of education. T h e College a c t u a l l y p r e p a r e s s t u d e n t s for a wide variety of v o c a t i o n s , but its principal c o n c e r n is w i t h a general e d u c a t i o n . T h e d e g r e e of B a c h e l o r of A r t s is conferred u p o n students ho complete one of the four y e a r curricula offered by the College, e x c e p t t h o s e in a p p l i e d science for w h i c h the degree of B a c h e l o r of Science is given (also g r a n t e d on request to s t u d e n t s w h o s e m a j o r is in m a t h e m a t i c s , a science, or h o m e e c o n o m i c s ) . S t u d e n t s in the general curricula m u s t c o m p l e t e c e r t a i n p r e s c r i b e d s u b j e c t s including Rhetoric a n d a foreign l a n g u a g e , a r e q u i r e d a m o u n t of ork in liberal a r t s a n d sciences, a p r e s c r i b e d a m o u n t of

work in a s e l e c t e d major s u b j e c t , ,i pi in

U n d e r the system of tutorial work, studenl of rn< t h a n average ability in the College may be ^iven op tunities for independent study and investigation. A limi' n u m b e r of gifted and m a t u r e s t u d e n t s may make arran;. merits in the College for individual curricula. T h e purpo of such individual curricula is to serve to the best possibl a d v a n t a g e the needs of the superior s t u d e n t w h o can demo n s t r a t e his capacity to profit more from an individual prog r a m of studies t h a n from any of the conventional on T h e College provides t h r e e specialized curricula: F i r s t : A four year c u r r i c u l u m in C h e m i s t r y : second: a four year c u r r i c u l u m in Chemical E n g i n e e r i n g ; t h i r d : a four year c u r r i c u l u m with a special major in home economics. Pre-professional t r a i n i n g is provided in the College in the following c u r r i c u l a : in t h e General C u r r i c u l u m , prej o u r n a l i s m ( t w o y e a r s in the College and t w o y e a r s in the School of J o u r n a l i s m ) : prc-legal ( t h r e e or four y e a r s in the College and t h r e e in the College of L a w |; pre-cducation ( t w o y e a r s in the College and t w o y e a r s in the College of E d u c a t i o n ) ; pre-medical ( t h r e e or four y e a r s in the College, four y e a r s in t h e College of Medicine and one year's i n t e r n e s h i p ) . pre-dental ( t w o y e a r s in the College and t h r e e y e a r s in t h e College of D e n t i s t r y ) , and p r e - p h a r m a c y t o n e y e a r in t h e College, and t h r e e y e a r s in the College of Pharmacy.) T h e s e specialized curricula and the pre-prof ional p r o g r a m s p r o v i d e either a general or a specific t r a i n i n g for o c c u p a t i o n s or p r e p a r a t o r y work leading to professions.
