It is a Morrill land grant college. i was opened March 2, 1868, with 50 students and three faculty members. Graduate work began in 1892. Summer sessions started in 1894. Studies in law were organized as a school in 1896 and as a college in 1900. The School of Llusic was organized in 1897 and is now a part of the College of •Lne and Applied Arts which was organized in 1931. Business training was started in 1900 and organized into the College of Commerce in 1915. The School of Sducation was organized in 1905 and became a college in 1918. The School of Physical Education was organized in 1932. In 1897, the Library School was created by the Ipquisition of the School of Library Economy which had been organized at the Armour Ir.3titute in Chicago in 1893. Journalism instruction was started in 1902 and the ichool of Journalism organized in 1927. The School of Pharmacy was organized in 1896 by acquisition of the Chicago College of Pharmacy, founded in 1859. It •chierea college status in 1932. and of Ch ago, e s t a b l i s h e d i n 1881, became a f f i l i a t e d with t h e U n i v e r s i t y of I l l i n o i s , w.d in 1913 became a p a r t of i t . The College of D e n t i s t r y was formed in 1905 from a department c r e a t e d i n t h e College of Medicine i n 1 9 0 1 .
