UNION BUILDINGS

President Alexander G* Ruthven, Univer* sity of Michigan:

" N o w that the Michigan U n i o n has been in operation for nearly eighteen years, it is difficult indeed to say h o w we could possibly get along without it. Its primary purpose, of course, is to serve as a social center for the men students of the University, w h i c h it admirably does* "I am sure that not only the University but also the entire community would agree with me in saying that the Michigan U n i o n is an indispensable asset."

ARE NECESSARY

UNIVERSITIES

SAY P R E S I D E N T S OF NEIGHBORING

President Edward C* Elliott, Purdue Uni* versity:

"The Purdue Memorial U n i o n Building has been in operation for more than twelve years. Each of the years has added to the convincing evidence of the worth of the U n i o n to the entire University. T h e U n i o n is a unifying influence to the University, not o n l y internally but also externally."

President L* D* Coffman, U n i v e r s i t y of Minnesota:

"Going to college involves far more than merely attending classes. Some of the most important educational values are acquired through participation in the somewhat intangible, but nevertheless important, round of activities that are grouped together under the term 'student life.' A n adequate student U n i o n is essential in the development of a rich, full-rounded student life. It is recognition of this that is leading us at Minnesota to make plans for the erection of a n e w student Union."

Acting President G* C. Sellery, University of Wisconsin:

"The service of the U n i o n to the Wisconsin campus might be told in terms of the 5,000 to 6,000 students, faculty, and alumni w h o use it each day as a supplement to their living quarters. "It is one of the instrumentalities w h i c h is helping to restore the personal relations between students, and between students and teachers, which once graced and strengthened education in the smaller college."

President E. A* Gilmore, University of I o w a :

"The Iowa U n i o n has come to serve such an important place in the life of the University of Iowa campus that the most frequent comment about it n o w is, 'How did we ever get along without the Union!' It is i n every sense the social center for the entire campus—both faculty and students. One of the major contributions and services of our U n i o n is the opportunity it offers for the integration of student activities."

OTHER UNION

BUILDINGS

President William Lowe Bryan, Indiana University:

"The U n i o n Building at Indiana University is judged by impartial and discerning persons to be a first-rate architectural success. T h e life of the University flows through it every day. "I do not overemphasize the values of the building. I state them."

Michigan U n i o n for Men, built in 1916, cost $1,545,000. Purdue U n i o n , a well-organized and much-used building, built in 1924, cost $1,185,000.

P r e s i d e n t C h a r l e s E* Friley, Iowa State College:

"The Memorial U n i o n at the Iowa State College solves many problems of social life among the students by providing ample accommodations for practically all types of worth-while social activities. "We feel that it would be difficult to get along without the U n i o n , particularly in its relation to the general program of student life."
