Page 16 COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES was established in 1913 by combining the College of Arts and College of Sciences "which with Ag riculture and Engineering had been the original four units of the University when it opened in 1868. Today, offering both degree curricula and service courses for students in other units, it is the largest unit of the University. Departments are: astronomy, bacteriology, botany, chem* istry and chemical engineering, classics, English, entomology, French, geography, geology, German, history, mathematics, philosophy, physiology, political science, psychology, sociology and anthropology, Spanish and Italian, speech, zoology, and the Division of General Studies. Dean after Feb. 1, 1959, will be Lyle H. Lanier.

CLINICS in three fields are operated under the College of Liberal Arts to provide opportunities for student training and for research, and at the same time service to the citizens of the state. These are: Speech Clinic, 601 E. John St., Champaign; Hearing Center, 322 Illini Hall, Champaign; Psychological Clinic, 1005 W. Nevada St., Urbana. INSTITUTE OF GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS was established in 19^7 to investigate problems of public administration and contribute to preparation of students for public service. It plans research particularly for state and local government in Illinois; publishes results, and arranges short courses and conferences for public officials and in-service training for public employees. Director is Gilbert Y. Steiner.

GRADUATE COLLEGE was formally established in 1907, though the University had been offering advanced courses since 187^ • Dean since 1955 is Frederick T. Wall,

COLLEGE OF LAW was established in 1897. Dean since September 1, 1957 is Russell N. Sullivan.

SCHOOL OF SOCIAL WORK started in l$kk offers accredited training in every specialization approved by National Council on Social Work Education. Instruction is offered at Urbana-Champaign and at the University's professional campus in Chicago. Director is Marietta Stevenson.

SUMMER SESSION was fir*t held in l89fc. Dean since 1938 is Robert B. Browne. (He also heads extension, page 9») FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY ARTS, Urbana-Champaign campus, Mar. 1-April 5, 1959i includes Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting and Sculpture, Exhibit of Work by American Craftsmen, exhibits in architecture*, city planning, landscape architecture, printing; music and dance concerts by campus and visiting artists; opera, motion pictures, drama, radio and television programs, and lectures.
