THE GRADUATE COACHING SYSTEM

It is n o t so v e r y long since o u r football teams here at Illinois w e r e coached by outsiders, w h o w e r e called from other colleges and hired to take charge of o u r players and tutor them in the intricacies of t h e game. A s an institutution, h o w e v e r , the professional coach w a s n e v e r a success, so in 1904, five years ago, the graduate coaching system was installed. T h e first team u n d e r the n e w regime was a good one ; w e tied Chicago, six to six. N e x t year the team w a s but mediocre and the enthusiasm o v e r alumni coaches began to subside. T h r e e years ago, w h e n oblivion was escaped o n l y by the n a r r o w margin of a six to n o t h i n g victorx o v e r the poorest team in the Conference, sentiment against the n e w system became rampant. I ast year—we started the season with a f o r t y - t w o to six defeat by Chicago the w h o l e University was frankly antagonistic. Anie Hall, w h e n t h e y too insistently demand his return, s o m e times repeats a s e m p of conversation he o v e r h e a r d at this game. O n e loyal o r a n g e and blue rooter s p o k e to his ompanion, also a loyal o r a n g e and blue r o o t e r : 44 W h a t are they going to do about the c< idling next M car ?
